In the Second Coming the speaker describes a nightmarish scene the falcon,

center cannot hold”; anarchy is loosed upon the world. “The blood-dimmed tide is loosed,
and everywhere/The ceremony of innocence is drowned.” The best people, the speaker
says, lack all conviction, but the worst “are full of passionate intensity”.
This passage is written in iambic pentameter, however the meter is loose, and the
exceptions frequent that it seems closer to free verse with frequently heavy stresses. The
rhymes are likewise haphazard; apart from the two couplets with which the poem opens,
there are only coincidental rhymes in the poem, such as “man” and “sun”.
The first stanza opens up with violent images and terrifying ritualistic language;
“Turning and turning in the widening gyre”. Structurally the first stanza is describing the
conditions present in the world (things falling apart, anarchy, blood dimmed tide is
loosed”) The speaker uses metaphor to describe this coming of the end as a loose
“blood-dimmed tide”. The end of one cycle of history is near, and a new one is soon
approaching. “Turning and turning in the widening gyre the falcon cannot hear the
falconer”. This line can perhaps be seen as symbolic of the falconer losing control of the
falcon which sweeps in “widening circles” around him until he finally breaks away. This is
symbolic of the end of the present “gyre” of civilization.
The second stanza surmises from the conditions that are present in the first stanza.
It states that a monstrous Second Coming is about to take place, not of the Jesus we first
knew, but of a new messiah, a “rough beast”, the slouching sphinx rousing itself in the
desert and lumbering toward Bethlehem. The Second Coming is symbolic of a new age
which will take its character not from the gyre of science, democracy, and speed, but from
the contrary inner gyre-which, presumably opposes mysticism, primal power, and slowness
to the science and democracy of the outer gyre. The “rough” beast slouching toward
Bethlehem is the symbol of this new age. The speakers vision of the rising sphinx is his
vision of the character of the new world.
The Second Coming is a statement about the contrary forces at work in history, as
well as the conflict between the modern world and the ancient world. Instead of our
traditional view of the messiah coming to save us at a time of doom the speaker creates a
monstrous beast; “shape of lion body and the head of a man”. The Second Coming brings
into question what the end really does entail for the future of man and woman kind.
