In the story “The Lottery”, I felt that the most interesting symbolic act was the Lottery it self. In the story the whole town gets together for this one traditions every year, the parents and kids all get ready for this annual tradition. The kids, although it seems like the reason for the Lottery is wrong, know their part in the Lottery and gather rock and stones. In the story the tall boy named Jack, who pick the ticket for his household is respected for stepping up and taking his responsibility. I personally find this Lottery to be very interesting because everyone in the village gather year after year to get stoned and the end of the Lottery. Everyone in the village knows to show up and knows who didn’t show up, and takes necessary actions to fill in for the missing person. In Mrs. Dunbar’s situation, she knew she had to step up and take the place for her injured husband and she also knew that her16 year old son couldn’t do the Lottery. As for Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson, she knew where her husband and kids were and didn’t give a second thought to get to the town center. Everyone in this village knew they had to be there and no one tried to sneak out of the Lottery. Although I don’t know the real reason why someone has to be stoned at the end of the lottery be everyone in the village respects in it and comes out year after year. And even though Tessie feels that her family was cheated out she knew what she had to do.
