The bankers are using their power and strength to their own advantage. By putting the lower class against each other, there will always be someone fighting for a job here or there and will do anything for it, even if it means lower wages. By printing more and more pamphlets and by having more and more people arrive to their doors, people will be fighting for the spot on the job even if they will make close to nothing. (pg 08). The Joads, still however, remained in their own bubble, kept away from the truth and in a bit of denial. Further travels, though, would soon prove them wrong.
Along Route 66 the family swam in a sea of cars heading out west. Having originally denied that so many people were on their way, their eyes began to breathe the reality that has hit them so quickly. The Joads could now visualize the situation that others were in, and that they were not the only one at the bottom of the ladder of class. They were all victims from the bankers, from the landowners, and from the scorched Earth that seemed to reject an equal opportunity. Poverty turned into victimization as this greater evil spawned out of the hatred that brewed within the natives as they watched more and more migrants bring filth through their city. The migrants were now labeled as reds who wished to thwart democracy and capitalism and steal the wealth of others through communism. Migrants, even though within they contained parallel hardships to the natives, were now seen as beneath humanity. The class struggle entwined with a greater motif, which is the victimization of others.
The American dream, being cooked by the ones who came out the most successful, had begun to bake it so that no others could step up the intensely heated ladder of difference. Steinbeck described how the land fell into fewer hands, the number of dispossessed increased, and every effort of the great owners were directed at repression. (pg 6). The Joads were the victims of this repression, as were many others. Small efforts at victimization by the settled and the natives grew to more violent methods. The contractors did what anyone would do in a time of crises; band together and they formed the Association of Farmers. The Association, controlled by few rich landowners, developed ways to keep the competition beneath brewing and the opportunity low. The wealthy not only wanted the lower class to fight amongst each other, but also to stay unorganized and family against family.
