Clara Barton was a fascinating woman. She achieved many goals and saved many lives.
Even though she didnt have a real education she was very bright. She was born into a

working class family with two brothers and two sisters, but more about them later.
Clarissa Harlowe Barton, better known as Clara, was born in Oxford, Massachusetts
on December 5, 181. Her fathers name was Captain Stephen Barton. Her mothers name
was Sarah. Her father was a horse farmer and breeder, while her mother managed the
household and taught the children to be clean and patient. Her sister Dorothy taught her
spelling and reading. Sister Sally taught geography. Her brother Stephen taught Clara math
and her other brother, David, taught her physical fitness and athletics.
When Clara was 16 years old she became a school teacher. She noticed that many kids
couldnt afford school, so she set up a free public school in Bordentown, New Jersey. She
couldnt teach school anymore because of a throat sickness. After she recovered, she was
hired for a government job and then the war began.
Clara became involved in the was as a nurse. Her first patients were her old students, so
she rushed to help them. Most of the men she worked on were dazed and bleeding to death
after the first Bull Run. In July of 186, Clara got permission to go behind the lines and she
reached some of the most ugly battles, such as the battle of Richmond, Petersburg and the
first Bull Run. She found that there were no supplies or shelter for the men on both sides
and she got help from other women. There were over ,000 women in the war as nurses and
most of them didnt keep accurate records. People from all over sent money and other supp-
lies to help her. When she was done collecting all the supplies, there were over warehouses
full of bandages and shelter material.
After the war, Clara founded part of the Red Cross in the U.S. in 1881. She devoted her
life to her organization. She did many more things, like lecture about her experiences and on
the Sufferage Movement. But this was too much for her and she had a physical breakdown.
Later she retired to Europe. After her vacation, she moved back home to Glen Echo, in
Washington, D.C. where she died on April 1, 11.
This concludes my report on this wonderful woman. Clara is still a hero today and will
always be a part of history. I hope youve enjoyed this report as much as I have.
