The Bottom is a mostly black community. It’s located in the hills of the mostly white community of Medallion, Ohio. Some whites want to make the land a golf course. Shadrack is probably the most strangest person in the community. He is a veteran of WWI, and goes around the town telling the townspeople to plan the day of their death without thinking about dying naturally. He proclaimed a National Suicide Day. The town learns to tolerate him.

The families of Nel and Sula are compared in the novel. Nel’s mother, Helene, grows up in The Bottom because her mother was a prostitute. She raises Nel to be like her. Nel turns out good, but doesn’t want to grow up to be like her mother. Her home was stable. Sula’s family is different. She lives with her mother and grandmother, whom are both loose. Their house also serves as a home for several boarders and three young boys. Even though Nel and Sula differ in backgrounds and personalities, they manage to become best friends. Sula shares all of her thoughts with Nel.

One day while Nel and Sula were out playing with Chicken Little, Sula accidentally kills him. She lost her grip while swinging him around and he falls into the river and drowns. They never told anyone about this. Sula feels guilty. A year later Sula’s mother burns and dies when her dress catches on fire.

A few years later Nel gets married. Sula leaves The Bottom because she thinks she lost her only friend. She doesn’t see Nel again until she returns. When she returns ten years later, she seems harsh. She puts her grandmother in a home and sleeps with Nel’s husband. Sula becomes the blame for all evil that happens in The Bottom. She and Nel stopped being friends. A couple of years later, Sula is dying. Nel forces herself to see her out of her goodness. The visit becomes an argument. She tells Nel not to be so sure that she’s always right and higher than someone else. Nel leaves angry, but thinks about what Sula told her. A while after Nel’s visit, Sula goes into pain and dies. The townspeople expect her death to bring forth goodness, but it doesn’t. They had no one to blame everything on.

Many years passed. The Bottom is now different. The neighbors hardly speak to one another, and Nel doesn’t know many people. One day while at the nursing home, she sees Sula’s grandmother. She asks Nel why she killed Chicken Little; Nel says Sula did it and that she only saw what happened. Sula’s grandmother tells her that watching is the same as doing. Nel leaves angry.

Going home, she passes the cemetery and decides to look at the graves. She thinks back to how she and the townspeople treated Sula. She admits that she shouldn’t have let Sula feel so guilty. Nel realizes that she justified that she was the good one and Sula was the bad one. Leaving the cemetery, she feels sad and a cry coming on. As she walks, she calls out Sula’s name. Sorrow dawns upon, realizing she treated her best friend wrong. I really enjoyed the book. I think I liked it so much because it was very interesting. It showed how two people could become friends despite differences. It teaches that you shouldn’t judge yourself as being better than anyone else.

The characters that stood out the most were Sula and Nel. Even though they had different personalities and came from different backgrounds, they still were friends. When Sula left The Bottom and returned, she was known for being an evil person. Everyone in the town blamed everything bad that happened on her. Nel believed she was the good one. She believed this until Sula’s grandmother put thoughts in her head about being just like Sula.

The most interesting part of the book is when Nel went to the cemetery. She went there to

visit Sula’s grave. While she was at the grave, she thinks about how she and the townspeople treated Sula. This makes her realize how wrong they treated her. She also thinks about the opportunities Sula and her could have had. All she could do was call out Sula’s name.

I can relate to this book to everyday life by saying that one should never think that they’re better than someone else. One also should never mistreat or put their friends down. Friendships should be equal.

I would recommend this book to someone because I think it is a good book to read. I also think it teaches a good lesson on friendship and not to always think of one’s self.
