As humans, it is our nature to have fears about things we are unsure of. Horror movies have always appealed to the masses because they provide a safe venue through which the public can be faced with their fears. The three movies; Psycho, Frankenstein, and Dracula, each had different underlying themes which highlighted different fears that we all have. The fear of being betrayed by someone we trust, the fear of the chaos that can erupt when a man tries to play God, and the basic fear of the paranormal, were each expressed very well in the movies.
Alfred Hitchcock’s 160 version of the movie Psycho caused quite a stir at the time it was released. Although it is quite different from the more modern horror movies, it has held it’s position as one of the scariest movies of all time. The reason for this, being the fact that the monster in this story didn’t seem to be a monster at all in the beginning. Norman Bates was a mild mannered, quiet, seemingly carefree person. This is what made the terrible things he did, seem all the more frightening. The monster in this case was created as the result of a psychological problem. Norman Bates was probably never completely normal. Family problems, such as his father leaving, and his mother eventually getting a new boyfriend whom Norman was quite jealous of, triggered the monster that was in Norman’s head the whole time. In our society, we are generally taught to trust people or situations unless circumstances arise to make us think the other way. The monster in this case, did nothing suspicious to render himself as being harmful. Another thing our society pushes us to do, is form associations and friendships with others. The scary thing about Normal Bates, was that he betrayed the friendship and trust he was given. This character was probably not invented with the intention that everyone should become paranoid about meeting new people. The fact is though, that you have to be careful about who you trust.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was an unnerving tale about a man who decided to play God, without thinking about what the aftermath could be. There is some controversy as to which character was the actual monster; Dr. Frankenstein, or the monster he created. Dr. Victor Frankenstein was trying to push the limits and defy what the medical and science community believed, by creating life himself. Whether this is was inhumane, or just human nature combined with bad luck, the experiments Dr. Frankenstein conducted had a shocking outcome. An unpredictable, horrendous, monster was born. The creature was so frightening because no one, including it’s creator knew what it was capable of doing. The main fear that arises from this story is the fear of the unknown. Generally the public likes to have a strict set of guidelines, like laws or statistics, because we like to be sure of things. The creature in Frankenstein instills fear a few different ways, and it definitely doesn’t do so by abiding with the laws of nature. Firstly, the creature is gruesome and revolting to look at. The next frightening thing about the monster is the uncertainty associated with a new form of life. The monster’s large stature and the intimidation factor, cause people to have a fear of physical harm because they didn’t know what it’s intentions were. The foremost underlying theme and perhaps the scariest aspect of the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his creation, was the fact that he succeeded to a certain degree at playing God. At the time the story was written, religion was a very large part of the lives of most people. The controversial topic of whether or not humans can or should create life is still around today. Cloning is essentially taking what most believe should be God’s work, into your own hands. Although humans have had a few successes cloning, Frankenstein is a frightening look at what could happen from the point of view of a skeptic.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula created the image of a blood sucking vampire which is still alive today, accompanied by a fear of what could be lurking in the dark. In the story, Count Dracula’s lover kills herself, and because of this she would not be admitted into heaven. Dracula became so enraged that he would not be able to see his wife again, not even in the afterlife, that he stabbed the cross and drank the blood that came from it. By doing so, he became the anti-Christ, a force so evil that he would have immense power, and he would never die. Society fears Dracula because he is a force stronger than any wall you hide behind, or any weapons you may have to defend yourself with. Dracula, as portrayed in the movie, has an alluring quality about him, which adds to the feeling of not being able to escape. This monster is known as a blood sucking vampire, yet it is not the physical harm that most would have nightmares about. Count Dracula goes through metamorphosis and change into any form. It is this paranormal aspect, combined with the fact that, basically you have nowhere to escape, which cause this monster to be so great.
