After the time period of the Paw Roma, Rome was a well-established empire. The Senate did not have the power they wanted, Rome was not a republic. There was a big difference between the rich and the poor. The poor people worked hard to support their family. Most of the Roman Empire was made up of the middle class. The rich lived a simple life, and an easy life. Romes army was out conquering everything they could. Rome is portrayed different in the book. Roma was made up of the middle, but they were not at war during the time they are during the movie.

Maximus had many conflicts with Commodus; Maximus had never liked Commodus since his birth. He thought of Commodus as a coward. He would not come to the battlefield till the war was over. Maximus would not give Commodus his oath to serve him. Commodus was jealous of Maximus fame and power over the armies of Rome. Maximus wants revenge on Commodus because he killed his father and family. Maximus resoled almost all his conflicts with Commodus, by killing him in the end of the movie and making Roma a republic again. In the book, Maximus was a well known Gladiator, but was never given power over the Roman Empire.

Maximus was a determined, and loving man. He is determined to get revenge on Commodus for killing his family. He works hard and prays to get his revenge. He tells Commodus he will get revenge on him in this world or in the after world. He shows his love for his family, by praying for them when he is in the army, and tells everyone about his family. He also shows his love for his family when he rides to save his family from being killed by the Roman Army. He has many strengths, when he falls down he gets right back up showing no fear. Maximus has his weaknesses; he is almost killed when he turns his back to Commodus. His character was the only one to stand up to Commodus and tell him what he thinks. If it would have been later in time Commodus would have hung Maximus and there would not be Gladiators.

That is the story of Maximus. The time in which he lived, the people he conflicted with, and his character who made him who he was.
