Throughout history people have been fascinated with African American literature, so when I found this novel I knew that it was something that I would enjoy. I immediately started reading this novel and fell in love with it during the first three paragraphs. This novel is filled with very exciting information that I think everyone would really enjoy.

The novel is organizd with rman numerals, which consist of 7 pages, which is written in an antiquated language. Those antiqated words are used frequently throughout the novel. They are also used with some modern language as well. In the novel Du Bois requently referred to blacks as colored people or Negroes. Not once in the novel did Du Bois use African American to refer to a black man or a black woman.

In Chapter four, du Bois describes the egregation at the Teachers Institute [where] distinguished quests of hte superintendent taught the teachers fractions and spelling...-white teachers in the morning Negroes at night(6). This quote enlightened me that even Du Bois became a teacher, he had to pay a small price for being a black man. That small price that he had to pay was being taught last by the superintendent even if was learing the same skills as the white teachers.

A wonderful quote out of this novel that I will always remember is the history of the American Negro is the history of this strife, -this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double selfinto a better and truer self(5). This quote to me implid that the black mans double self is his american life and his African life, yet he wants to be accepted not only as an American but also as an African American. As the wording goes one has to remember the past in order to move to a brighter future. This is what the black man is trying to do in this novel.
