Glory, a movie about the Massachusetts 54th, the first all-black Union regiment led by white leader Robert Shaw. This depiction of the true story brought out the feelings of the black soldiers who fought, along with, their white commanders. Two character’s feelings truly evolve throughout the movie, one being Robert Shaw and second being Silas Trip.

Robert Shaw is the colonel of the Massachusetts 54th who took on this position after it being offered by the governor. At the beginning of the movie Robert’s treats his men as they were treated throughout there life, that of disrespect and as if they were animals. Thomas, a close friend of Robert, was even treated poorly by him, disregarding the past the two had. In a couple of cases Robert completely ignores what Thomas has to say and basically blows him off. When his men are “out of line” he makes sure they are punished, and at times in manners which may be inhumane. When Silas Trip was caught leaving, to try and get some shoes, he was whipped in front of the whole regiment. At this point Robert felt remorse for what he had done, often going to the tent to see if Silas was going to be treated right.

Robert’s views drastically change from the beginning to the end of the movie. He now tries to look at the men very open-minded. He treats them as though they are like any other person not seeing the contrast of black and white anymore. Robert is now willing to fight for what he believes his men deserve. He marched into town and ordered that all his men get shoes, after being showed how bad they were suffering. After the whipping of Silas, he was made aware of the problem and immediately took action. In another case, the men had been waiting for a uniform to come for them. They were beginning to feel that they were not worth the cloth that would be put on their backs. Robert then fought for his men to their uniforms.

Throughout the movie there were rumors spreading that the 54th black regiment would ever get a day in combat. People were saying that they would only be used for manual labor. At the beginning this was true, they were used to burn and pillage villages. Robert knew the possibilities his men had so he also then fought for his men to get into combat. He wrote his father and had him write to President Lincoln telling him of his wishes. Robert also went to the governor and pleaded for his men to get to fight. His wish was then granted.

When Robert and his men went to the battle to fight they fought with more honor and pride than other regiments had. With this being noticed by many this black regiment was kept in battle conditions and brought to the fort to fight. At this point it is obvious that Robert’s view towards his men had drastically changed. When he was asked about the his men leading the charge he said, “There is character, there is strength in heart. We will be ready Sir.”

Silas Trip was a former slave who enlisted merely for vengeance. His attitude towards life and that of all other beings was negative at the beginning. Silas referred to all the black people as “N” even though they didn’t see themselves as that. No matter who the person was, or how they acted, he treated them like dirt. Silas was put through terrible things when he was younger. He was a slave in the south and was treated very unfairly. When Robert punished him to lashings the extent of his misfortune was revealed. He had scars on top of scars.

Regardless of what he went through his entire life, Silas did find a way to look at a white man in a different way. At the very end of the movie and the battle at the fort, Silas follows his fellow leader up the hill even though the consequences could be fatal. It was ironic the way Robert and Silas’ bodies were laid next to each other, this offsets their original views and now represents the way they all will live, and how the two believe we should live.
