In doing this assignment I chose to look at the works of Mary Cassatt. The book I used for this is simple called Mary Cassatt, paintings and prints. Mary Cassatt lived from 1844 to 16 in Pittsburgh and then in Paris. Miss Cassatts paintings are labeled as impressionist paintings a term that she did not like being called. Mary Cassatt was a rebel of her times and preferred to be called an independent not an impressionist.
The paintings she did appeared to be very true to life and showed how she felt in certain times of her life.
The first painting that caught my eye is called Miss Mary Ellison; which is a painting of her closest friend when they attended school in Paris. I chose this painting because the colors she used in it are so dark and it made me sad when I looked at it. The painting made me ask what is wrong with the girl why does she look so sad or why does Miss Cassatt picture her this way? I found a pattern in her paintings that intrigued me and made me want to read more about each painting.
In all of the paintings that I looked at, Mary Cassatt seem to take a picture of what she was going to paint, and then transforming that picture into a beautiful painting. Each of the works I saw made me feel as if I was looking at a photograph of someone close to her. She rarely used still life models, but each picture looked as if the person was sitting there just for her, yet when all she did was paint what she saw in her head. Looking at the painting Miss Mary Ellison, the picture shows a woman sitting on a couch or chair of some kind holding a fan. The woman appears to be lost in thought not aware or caring that we can see her. I was curious to know why the mirror behind her is reflecting the back of her head but does not show anything else in the room.
