Calpurnia is the black maid for the Finches. She grew up with the Finch family with Scout and Jems grandfather teaching her how to read and write.

Calpurnia response was very different to that of Atticus’ when Scout later asked him, this resulted in Scout being confused on Calpurnia’s reaction when asked what rape is. Unfortunately, Calpurnia’s parenting methods never differed and came nowhere close to the parenting methods of Atticus and this results in a very confused Scout and Jem.
In all situations that involved Calpurnia in the novel she always reacted in a caring way. Whatever the event Calpurnia nurtured the effected. This is shown when Scout becomes extremely confused and hurt over her brothers changing attitudes and actions. Calpurnia shows her caring side and comforts Scout explaining that Jem is going through changes in his life and that is what is causing his odd behaviour.
Calpurnia is a good person in this novel and makes a great ‘mother figure’, and sets good examples for both Scout and Jem to follow in their lives.
