Write your behaviour of a sportsperson research paper

In this assignment I will be looking at how certain sportsmen have acted when they have acted unprofessionally when playing their sport or just having a night out on the town. Over the years certain professional sportsmen have been in the media for acting the incorrect way, or being stupidly drunk when out and getting arrested. This behaviour is totally unacceptable for any professional sportsman, young people look up to these people and when they behave unprofessionally it rubs off on their young fans.

Example 1

Jody Morris (001)

Vital ingredients The Chelsea Four, nightclubs

Just when you thought footballers were beginning to learn how to behave themselves, Chelsea produce a youngster from another era. In the past two months alone, the -year-old has produced enough bad behaviour to warrant a place on this list. The Chelsea Four (Morris, plus Frank Lampard, John Terry, Eidur Gudjohnsen) spent the day after the World Trade Centre attacks getting drunk in front of grieving Americans in a Heathrow hotel. A month later Morris was involved in a nightclub fight. And he has form including spending a night in the cells after being arrested for being drunk and disorderly after a binge in Wimbledon last year. Morris and pals were reported to police for fighting in a pub and lying in the road with their tops off.

Example

CANTONAS CRIMES

187 - Fined heavily for punching his own goalkeeper at Auxerre, he gave the goalie Bruno Martini a black eye in the process.

188 - After calling the former French National coach a Shitbag (Henri Michel), he was banned for a year.

18 - The French FA had to yet again suspend the controversial French star after - kicking the ball into the crowd, throwing his shirt at the referee and storming off the pitch.

10 - Hit his team-mate Jean Claude Lemoult with his football boots, and his club Montpellier therefore banned him for ten days, he returned to Marseille after the incident.

11 - He was sold to Nimes where he was banned for three games after throwing the ball at the referee. At the disciplinary hearing he muttered the word idiots. He was then asked to repeat himself and so walked up to each member of the three man board and shouted at each of them Idiot. He was banned for two months and Cantona announced his retirement from football.

1 - He was sent off at the end of Uniteds European game against Galatasaray in Turkey after accusing the referee of cheating. He was then involved in a bust up with police in the tunnel and he received a four match European ban.

14 - In the two successive matches in March that year he was sent off. The games were against Arsenal and Swindon. (The sending off at Swindon was because of stamping on an opponent - John Moncur).

14 - In a 14/5 pre-season game, Cantona was sent off at Ibrox when playing against Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers. It was his fourth sending off in nine months and he got a three-match ban.

January 15 - Dismissed in a game against Crystal Palace where he kicked out at an opponent. Then walking off the pitch the infamous Cantona act happened. He assaulted a fan, by throwing a kick at the Palace fan, Matthew Simmons, followed by a series of punches. He was fined £0,000 by Manchester United and received a ban until the end of the season, and later on he was fined another £10,000 and his ban was increased until September 0th by the English Football Association. A court hearing sent Cantona to weeks imprisonment, but he was then freed on bail and the sentence was reduced to 10 hours community service.

He may have been a complicated person on and off the pitch but that didnt fail to bring fans flocking to Old Trafford to watch his great and unpredictable game play. He was a football genius and when he was on the pitch everyone just watched in ore as he showed off what he did best. His passing was impeccable and his finishing astounding, it proved to be one of Alex Ferguson greatest ever buys.

Example

The Ryder Cup

1 The Country Club, Brookline, MA

Americas triumph in golfs Ryder Cup has been overshadowed by a bitter row over the behaviour of the home teams players, officials and spectators in the closing stages of the competition.

The USA were accused of disgusting behaviour as the players and their wives ran onto the green just after Justin Leonard holed a crucial putt in the decisive match.

Opponent Jose Maria Olazabal had already been heckled while trying to play his second shot on the same hole and still had a chance to keep the match alive when the green was invaded.

Colin Montgomery was at the heart of most of the heckling from the disgusting American galleries. The biggest incidents came during Saturday mornings foursomes when a fan yelled as Montgomerie stood over his putt on the sixth green. Montgomerie backed off and then calmly sank the six-foot putt - then pumped his fist in the direction of the offensive fan and glared his way to the next hole. He heard catcalls while taking his practice swings on the eighth tee. And on the ninth, a cameras flashbulb went off before Montgomerie played his shot.

Then on No. 1, someone yelled, Shank it! has he was contemplating a shot from the fairway. After the shot, another fan yelled, Youre going down!

It was never going to be easy out there, said Montgomerie, who got a nice reception from the fans on the first tee for the afternoon four-ball matches and again Sunday morning when he teed off in singles.

Probably a little bit worse than anticipated, you know, coming from an American standpoint, their players gearing up the crowd like that. Its slightly unfair sometimes before we play our shots, to be honest with you. But at the same time, they have the home advantage and you know thats to be expected.

His fellow team-mates were disgusted with what they heard Paul Lawrie, the British Open champion playing in his first Ryder Cup, was a bit less diplomatic than Montgomerie.

Their (the gallerys) behaviour was just ridiculous, Lawrie said. I dont mind it when weve both played. If it means that much to them, then all the best to them.

Even the European vice-captain Sam Torrance reacted with fury saying

The United States should be ashamed. Its about the most disgusting thing Ive seen in my life.

He still has a putt to tie the hole, we could still take the Ryder Cup home.

The Europeans had complained about heckling throughout the event and for many, the claims of jeering crowds and yobbish behaviour have ruined a competition that embodies the spirit of sportsmanship in golf.

Example 4

00 Ryder Cup

The Belfry Golf Club, Warwickshire, England

After the last Ryder cup everyone was wondering how the winning team would act when the winning putt went in. The European players stormed across the green when it was over. Most of them already did their part by winning early and winning big, giving Europe the lead and momentum that it never surrendered on a thrilling afternoon at The Belfry. Even when the winning putt went in the European team celebrated, but they knew there where still matches to be finished so the captain Sam Torrance made all the players and photographers leave the 18th green and carried on celebrating by the side of the green, the team acted so much better then the Americans did in 1. The crowd also played a big part, they cheered the good shots and didn’t react to the bad ones by either teams. There was good sportsmanship over the whole days and the players certainly appreciated the crowd’s behaviour Bernhard Langer said,

“ I think the atmosphere was just perfect. You could obviously tell whether the Europeans made the point or the Americans. Thats always been the case. I didnt hear any cheering for bad shots. The people were very, very good, and lets hope it stays this way for years to come”

Even Curtis Strange the American captain had a lot of good things to say about the crowds at this years Ryder cup

The fans were great, rooted for their team, fair to us”

The atmosphere at this year’s Ryder cup was so better than it was at Brookline in ’. You can easily tell by the players comments. They had so many good words to say about the galleries.

The influence these situations had on the sportsmen involved

Example 1

Jody Morris

This behaviour was just totally unacceptable for anyone to do especially a professional footballer, an even worse he did it a day after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centre. The incident caused a lot of bad publicity for Chelsea, who reacted by fining the players involved. Weeks later, Morris was attacked while out in London. This just goes to show that even high quality football players can not get away with doing really bad things in the public eye. This also effected his football career in a big way, he was not picked for the England U1’s, the Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri dropped Morris from his team plans and has not really gave him a good chance since.

Example

Eric Cantona’s Crimes

In the infamous Kung-foo kick Cantonas volatile state of mind led to him attacking an abusive spectator. A court sentence of 10 hours community service was accompanied by a world-wide ban on Cantona playing football until October 15. The French FA stripped him of captaincy of the national team and Cantona would never play for his country again. In his absence United lost the League by a point to Blackburn, a title they surely would have won had he not been banned. Cantonas grace in accepting his punishment largely restored his popularity and he was voted the Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year for 16. 16 was Cantonas greatest year in which as Captain he led United to the Double, almost single-handedly. Scoring a string of vital match winning goals, including the FA Cup-final winner against Liverpool. Cantona also played a vital role in the shaping and teaching of Uniteds young players such as Beckham, Scholes and Giggs. It just goes to show that no matter what a person goes through in their career, there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and Eric Cantona has certainly proved that.

Example

The Ryder Cup

1 The Country Club, Brookline, MA

This was probably the worst Ryder cup for a long time. The American Ryder cup team behaved in such an unprofessional manner. What they did has brought a dark cloud over the Ryder cup and many people still have vivid memories of the scenes of drama on the 17th green.

The American galleries behaved in an even worse manner then the players, they cheered when the European player’s hit bad shots and even threw abuse at the European player’s wives. Mark James’s wife Jane got spat on by a spectator and then got told to “go home”. Even Colin Montgomerie’s dad had to leave because he didn’t want to hear the abuse his son was getting.

After the American press and spectators were saying how bad sports the Europeans were and it was just “sour grapes”. But some Americans had different views then others. One American spectator said

“I think the behaviour of Americans was a disgrace. It should be a friendly competition but apparently some Americans think winning is the only thing. I would suspend any American player who acted out of line. There was no need for heckling or for any celebration after Leonards putt. I feel ashamed and embarrassed”.

But then another spectator said

“WHINE, WHINE, WHINE!!! Another tee party in Boston has the English whining again. The great British Empire is now a fading memory. All the Brits seem to do now, instead of winning, is whine. Poor sports. We heard no complaints when Jesper was waving his fist around in triumph on Saturday. Go back to sleep you sorry fools and soon youll have something else to whine about. Until then, cheers!”

Golf is not a sport where the galleries behave in this manner, it is supposed to be a gentleman’s game. Especially in the Ryder cup, this is definitely the worst behaviour I have ever seen.

Example 4

00 Ryder Cup

The Belfry Golf Club, Warwickshire, England

After the controversy at Brookline in ’ all eyes where on the European team and supporters. All the American press where talking about how bad the European crowd will be to the America team and wives. The galleries behaved amazingly well, especially in contrast to the in-your-face atmosphere of the 1-Cup. They applauded good shots from both sides equally... well, maybe a bit louder for a European player, but that’s to be expected. Their behaviour was a marked contrast to Brookline’s where spectators yelled obscenities in the middle of a player’s backswing I think this goes to show how better sportsmen the European’s are even when Paul McGinley sank the winning putt they waited for all the matches to finish before starting to celebrate. Even when players ran on the 18th green the captain Sam Torrance told them to move off the green and celebrate by the side of the green until all the matches are over.

The European team mobs Paul McGinley after he holes the match-winning putt on the 18th to halve his match.

The Europe Ryder Cup team keeps a tight hold on the trophy they valiantly won.
