“Now here comes the sad part of the story, at least my family says it’s sad but I don’t think it’s sad myself.”(14) Young Sammy in the story A & P, written by John Updike, said that to show an optimistic view about the decision of quitting his job as a salesclerk in A & P. Whether it is a “crazy” decision or a reasonable one, it did work someway helpfully for that young man, especially as a resolution for all the conflicts he had to face since taking a job in that supermarket.

It is not Sammy who wanted to work for Lengel’s shop. Sitting in the third checkout slot all day long, watching the shopping-goers going back and forth, checking the cashier, and leaning on the register whenever the store is empty were such a boring work to Sammy. Yet he had to take this job to please his parents for they are the A & P manager’s friends. Born in a poor family, Sammy seemed not to like that unfortunate situation. That’s why he was impressed by the three girls, Queenie, Plaid, and Big Tall Goony-Goony, not only because of their attraction but also their wealth, which he hadn’t had in his poor home. And with a relationship for years between Mom and Dad with Lengle, Sammy expected to take a job for pleasing the parents and having some money for his poor family. However, working in the supermarket might be the saddest part of his story, even sadder than quitting a job. Everyday, boring salesclerk served the customers as if they were “sheep”(1), “house slaves”(14), or “witches”(1). And when all shoppers disappeared, a “pretty empty store” was described as a “pinball machine”(14) where there wasn’t any tunnel to come out. These descriptions showed that Sammy didn’t like the customers, nor did the supermarket. Therefore, he felt that being a cashier is not a suitable job for him.

The conflict within protagonist Sammy involved not only because of serving the “sheep” and working in a “pinball machine”, but also bearing with conservative Lengel. The attitude toward his manager was so irritated that he said “Everybody luck begins to run out”(15) when Lengel came in. Maybe the relationship with Sammy’s family reasonably made Lengel more powerful as his boss and really annoyed to him. Everytime, he wanted to rebel or disobey, Lengel took advantage of his relationship to have authority “Sammy, you don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad”(16). And off course, it was the weakest point that he couldn’t live on his own way and had to accept every rule in A & P.

Dealing with a boring job, unlikable customers and conservative boss, Sammy carried all the conflicts within his mind, which seemed unbearable someday. Therefore this brought a motivation of quitting job from the disagreement between him and Lengel about the three attractive female customers. As a young man, salesclerk Sammy liked to watch the three girls in bathing suits walking in the supermarket. Their impressive appearances surfaced all frustration in his work. However, his conservative boss didn’t accept that kind of clothes and asked the girls to get out of the store. The way the girls were “blush”(16) made young Sammy “scrunchy”(16) Consequently, he decided to quit his job to show a rebellion to Lengel’s unreasonable rule and to become an unsuspected hero for the girls.

Actually, the unbearable conflicts that he withstood for so long together with his disagreement to Lengel about the girls are the main reasons for Sammy to stop working in A & P. Why did he have to work in an uninteresting place? Why couldn’t he deny serving the “house laves”, “sheep” and “witches”? Why should he stand associating with such conservative boss as Lengle? All of the conflicts could be left for a long time because of the parents whom Sammy never wanted to displease. And it was time for him to emphasize his needs and live on his own. This caused a motivated conflict with his manager, which moved him to act as a resolution for all unbearable anger. However, Sammy got nothing from this decision. Even a little consolation of being an “unsuspected hero”(16) couldn’t come true for the girls were gone without any care about him. Quitting a job only helped Sammy become a winner in a rebellion with Lengel and his own conflicts. However, it did bring him to a harder world, as he knew already what he got. It was so reasonable for a rebel to stand for his principles. But it wasn’t a good choice since it left young Sammy to face an unpredictable and difficult circumstance. He wasn’t mature enough to think ahead for his future life. If only Sammy hadn’t lost his temper, if only he had a little time to think more, and found another resolution such as finding another job before stop working for Lengel, he wouldn’t make up his mind so hastily while a leading way for life was still another harder question.

Whether the future was brighter or not, young Sammy would find the way to manage his difficult situation. He experienced what to do to stand for his identity, then he would know how to make a better life.
