Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley Kent on, September 1, 1866. He is said to be the father of science fiction. His parents were shopkeepers and his father was a professional cricket player until he broke his leg. In 188 Wells became a teacher at Midhurst Grammar School. However, in 1887 he lost interest in school and left. In 181 he settled down in London and married his cousin Isabel. In 18 Wells became a professional writer. He divorced his wife and married his pupil Amy Catherine. His first major fiction novel was The Time Machine which he wrote in 185. During the time Wells spent writing this novel he was overly concerned with the fate of our society. He was also a member of the prestigious Fabian Society which was a group of philosophers in London. In the late 10’s Wells had an obsession that our society was on the brink disaster.

The novel The Time Machine was the story of a man that is referred to as The Time Traveler. He builds a machine that can travel through time and goes into the year 80,701 where he finds a society that he believes is utopian. As he further views this society he finds that it is far from perfect. At first he sees the people called the Eloi and thinks of them as the perfect race. He later finds out that these people are bred to feed another race called the Morlocks. He proves that the society he finds is far from being a utopian society and that a utopian society can not exist. He shows this through the knowledge of the characters and of the races in this book.

“There was no way out of the cages of life but by knowledge-knowledge of man himself and of man in relation to the things about him.”[Hillegas, Mark R, Pg. 1]. This is evident in The Time Machine from the actions of the Eloi. The Eloi mindlessly go to their doom at the will of the Morlocks. If they contained knowledge they would have been able to resist the Morlocks and they could fight for themselves instead of following the Morlocks wishes. Only with knowledge could the Eloi break free from the “cages” of life so they can control their own lives.

“To his horror the Time Traveler discovers that the Morlocks are still meat eaters… human meat.”[Wells H.G., Pg.] The fact that the Eloi are bread for food only is proof that the Eloi have no knowledge and therefore can not co-exist with the Morlocks without this system of breeding. This shows that a utopian society can not exist with this system in its society. The Morlocks are advanced and have the intellect to breed the Eloi but the Eloi have no way of defending themselves and this is why the more intellectual species is dominant. Although there is one intellectually advanced species the scale is not balanced and therefore this society is not a utopia.

“There he (time traveler) finds decaying palaces and a little pixie like people called the Eloi, living on fruit doing no work, somewhat epicene, easily fatigued, a sort of flower people.”[Wells H.G., Pg]. This shows that the Eloi are of little to no intellect and do no have the intelligence to do many things by themselves. These people can not perform simple tasks and live out their lives and make something out of their existence. These people can not produce all normal functions and are more like mindless cattle instead of human beings.

In conclusion a utopian society can not exist without knowledge. The Eloi had no knowledge therefore their society could not be a utopia. A utopian society has to contain equilibrium within its society. The Morlocks were vastly more intelligent than the Eloi but, since the Eloi were beneath the Morlocks a perfect society was not reached.

In the novel The Time Machine there were two societies which were called the Morlocks and the Eloi. The Eloi used to be the rich upper class people and the Morlocks were the poor working class. The working class wan sent underground so that the rich people did not have to see them. The Morlocks used technology and kept using it while the Eloi stopped using technology because they had no need to use it anymore. As a result the Eloi just got lazier and lost all of their knowledge.

“There were numbers of guns, rifles, and pistols.”[Wells H.G. Pg 86].The Time Traveler finds these things in a museum on the surface. This shows that the Eloi once had access to technology such as weapons and survival gear but had no need for it anymore and as a result their society declined. This also shows that the Eloi have the capacity to learn but they still need something to spark their minds.
