Soccer A Game of Hard Knocks

People have many different opinions of what the toughest sport is to play, and the most physically demanding. Throughout time you have heard of mass soccer riots in Italy, to television commercials sporting a naked man running across the field in the middle of a soccer game. Despite the outside distractions, the players continue to do what they are paid for, and that is to play the toughest sport on earth, soccer. When you hear names such as Pele, Preke, Ronaldo, or Americas own, Alexi Lalas, Im sure you think of some of the greatest soccer players ever. Although they are the best the world has to offer, even they had to put up with nagging or serious injuries to play the sport they love. Soccer players have been referred to as sissies or wimps, from other sports athletes like, football players and hockey players. They have also had to listen as people told them to play a different sport. What other sport offers you tackling, taking a ball to the head or face, virtually no pads (except shin pads.), and athletes playing through serious injuries like broken bones, and pulled muscles? None; thats why I think soccer is the toughest sport to play.

Soccer is rougher than most people actually think. People usually dont see whats happening outside the television camera’s view or off the field. Off the screen, you have players kicking each other, exchanging words, or even pushing each other around. Dont feel bad, though, because the referees dont see it half the time either. Then, during the game you have players slide tackling and taking each other out for possession of the ball. These players are wearing nothing to protect them from serious injuries. I know from experience. While I was in high school I was trying to play defense, and a member of my team accidentally fell on top of my leg, while a member of the opposite team kicked my leg, trying to get the ball. The result was me lying on the ground, with both the tibia and fibula broken in my left leg. The tibia had three different breaks. I recovered eight months later, but even though I knew the risk of serious injury was still there, I kept playing the game I love.

The problem with other sports is that unlike soccer the players sit out with the lamest injuries. According to an athletic trainer on, www.fifa.com, a soccer player that plays for a team called, Manchester United, “…had a broken foot in one game, but the following day he was back in the line-up. He is one tough cracker!” Relate that to football if someone gets turf toe, or a bruise, they usually sit out for the next game, which is normally a week away. However, soccer players play almost every other day in leagues such as the English Premier League, or high school. In basketball, they play a total of forty-eight minutes, and if a player gets injured, he sits out and doesn’t come back in. Soccer players have to play two continuous forty-five minute halves, and the only time they want to come off the field is if they need a stretcher. When athletes complain about being sore or tired in baseball, they ask for the day off. In the sport of soccer you dont have players making up excuses, as much, because they want to get back out and play. Then when they do ask for a day off, it’s well deserved. They play through almost every injury possible, and some even play with broken feet, and other broken bones.

Besides being rougher than other sports, soccer requires the most endurance. Soccer players have to be able to run for at least ninety minutes, compared to basketball’s twelve minutes a quarter, or baseball’s half an inning. The sport is non-stop most of the time and you don’t have time to stop running. Unlike other sports, soccer has no time-outs, so you cant stop in the middle of the game for a couple minutes to get water and a breather. According to, Tony Meola, a goalie for the Major League Soccer team, the Kansas City Wizards, “...it is tough, going out there and playing forty-five minutes straight, having a ten minute half-time break and then playing forty-five more minutes. You have to be physically and mentally in shape.” Tony is only a goalie too, if he was a forward or defender, he would be working his butt off a little more every game, but that goes to show you, that if a professional athlete is complaining, it must be tough. If soccer players didn’t have lots of endurance and stamina, then they would be known as “bowlers” or “golfers.”

Despite the harassment and name-calling constantly exerted by the fans and people, soccer players go on and do what they love and know how to do best. These are some of the lowest paid athletes in the sports industry, and yet they still give us unbelievable moments. Everything from diving headers to the bicycle kicks. We need to give these athletes our attention and respect, because they play the toughest sport in my opinion, and that’s soccer!
