Jealousy, a negative instinct, is not one of our instincts to be proud of because it is followed only with negative consequences. Jealousy can result in or lead you to financial difficulties within your family household. Discord in the family causing the family to break is another negative consequence of jealousy. Failure to perform job duties correctly causing major destruction is a negative consequence of jealousy. Jealousy will lead you only in the wrong direction and it will take everything that you have away from you.

Jimmy Cross was assigned to be the First Lieutenant, however, his jealousy over love causes him to perform poorly on his duties. While sitting one day, he was thinking about his love for Martha back at home. He was looking at a picture of her wondering who was with her that day to take the picture, and in the meantime one of his privates had wondered off and while returning to camp was shot in the head. He felt shame and he hated himself, he had loved Martha more than his men and had so much jealousy built up over her (O’Brien 84). Even though jealousy had taken a man’s life and put the other soldiers in harms way it provides a strong feeling of love. Cross had loved Martha so much that he was worried about her and who she was with.
