In Amazing Grace, Jonathan Kozol writes about the harsh living conditions that the people in the Bronx must face daily. When I first read Amazing Grace, I was appalled. I was shocked at the reality of the people’s lives and at the fact that I was not aware of such harsh realities. I had a hard time believing that such harsh living conditions existed in the United States.


One of the saddest aspects of this book is that the children are constantly surrounded by death, sickness and drugs. Many of them live with grandmothers or other family members because their own parents are dead, in prison or too drug-addicted to care for them. When drug dealers are the only ones with some money in the neighborhood, who else do these children have to look up to, even if they know it is wrong? Kozol points out the lack for role models and ambition - “Many of the ambitions of the children are locked-in at a level that suburban kids would scorn. It’s as if the very possibilities of life have been scaled back. Boys who are doing well in school will tell me, ‘I would like to be a sanitation man’” (Kozol, p.15). Children are known to have high dreams and hopes, however, the society has shattered the last hope they have and made them not see other opportunities they have awaiting them. Many of the children are naïve and do not see what lies beyond their home and are grateful for anything. This ignorance may be due to their lack of education and information given from their schools, which never educate their mind to expand from their horizon. Kozol clearly shows us of how poor education ruins a child’s life from the beginning.


I was also appalled by the strong segregation and discrimination that exists in our society. While reading the book I was especially touched by a child’s prayer � “god bless mommy. god bless nanny. god, dont punish me because Im black” (Kozol, p ). How could it be possible that the city would spend so much money on people who are trying to destroy lives and yet spend so little on those who have a right to live? The city spends no money on those that have hope, and yet spends so much on people who are destroying others hopes and dreams. The government knows about the existence of poor living conditions of the people in Bronx, but allow it continue? At times, I agreed with one lady interviewed by Kozol who said, “the government wanted to ignore the poor people and somehow hoped they would disintegrate someday”.

Schools with a forty percent poverty population can use additional funds to strengthen the entire school. Reading the article gave me hope that there is a chance for some of these children to not only survive, but also to flourish into successful, well educated individuals.
