MY FAVORITE FOOD

We Filipinos love to eat, but more than just eating, we love to eat home-cooked food, that special concoction of flavors and spices, one that is both handed over from tradition yet is widely ingrained in popular culture. We just love to eat!

We love eating so much that home-cooked food is the first thing we miss whenever we hit the road, eat in school, or go abroad for a vacation or search for greener pastures. While it is true that we can pacify our yearnings for our mother’s home cooking with every available fast food outlets’ offering, it is still no match from that of what we call “lutong bahay” or “luto ni nanay.” We surely know the difference especially when it comes to our favorite food. Talking about favorite food, mine is definitely “kare-kare.” I just love it so much that if my professor in my ComSD class will precondition my passing the course by eating only kare- kare for the rest of the semester, I would gladly do it. It has enough ingredients in it that you won’t need another recipe to satisfy your gastric desires and have a pleasurable experience. With my favorite kare-kare, I’ll have my meat, it can either be beef of pork, and I’ll also have my vegetables like sitaw, eggplant, pechay and banana blossoms. Not to mention the spices like garlic and onion which I also love. And of course my chili in the “bagoong” or “alamang guisado.” Its’ got peanuts too. See, it’s really a complete meal all by itself. Oh! By the way, I forgot to tell you, it looks great in yellow and orange serve in a “banga.”

The death penalty has been used throughout history, and has evolved from stoning women to death in Afghanistan for committing adultery to giving lethal injections in the U.S. to serial killers (Amnesty International). Today, the death penalty is reserved only for the absolute worst criminals, but that could change if the anti-death penalty fanatics that are so prominent in today’s media have their way. They claim that the death penalty is barbaric, unconstitutional, and should be banned. This view is the most prominent in the media when in fact 75% of Americans support the use of the death penalty (Koch 561). So why is the anti-death penalty movement so prominent today? Members of this movement take an activist position and are trying to change the laws, while pro-death penalty people take a more passive stance. They know that the death penalty is the law and they expect it to be carried out. The arguments that the anti-death penalty activists use look good on the surface, but upon close inspection they really don’t amount to much of anything.

The anti-death penalty activists in this country would have you believe that every time a murderer is executed the justice system has just committed murder as well. They would have you believe that every person on death row is a victim. What they don’t talk about is what that person did to get onto death row. They forget about the people that where killed, and the people whose lives where affected by the murders; these are the real victims. They had a right to live just like every else in the world but their lives where snuffed out by a murderer. In my opinion, every one has a right to live, but as soon as you murder another human being you forfeit that right. I cannot see a convicted felon as some sort of victim, because it was his own actions that brought about his fate, not the actions of another person.

Some people would argue that putting a murderer to death will not bring their victims back to life, or console their victims family, so what is the point? Well, putting someone in prison for the rest of their lives, or any other punishment for that matter, won’t bring their victims back to life either. So do you suggest we just don’t punish the killer for his actions? What punishment is supposed to do is prevent the killer from ever killing again, and what better way to do that than to take their own life away from them. If the most severe penalty a person can receive is to spend the rest of his/her life in jail, then what do you do when this is no longer enough? For example, a New York prisoner named Lemuel Smith, while serving six life sentences for his various crimes, including murder, strangled a female security guard, then mutilated and dismembered her body. Because New York has no death penalty, there is nothing that can be done to punish him beside another meaningless life sentence (Koch 56). What better way to preserve innocent life than to eliminate the people that would seek to destroy it? As for consoling the victims family, true, the death of their loved ones murderer may not make them feel better, but at least they can rest easy knowing that the killer is dead and gone instead of sleeping soundly in a prison bed.

What about all of the innocent people that are on death row? Before a prisoner is executed they go through a very extensive and effective appeal system. True, with new DNA evidence, we have been able to exonerate many people that were on death row, however, “there is, in fact, no proof that an innocent has been executed seance 100”(Sharp). That’s right even with DNA testing anti-death penalty activist can’t truthfully say that America has executed an innocent person in the past 100 years.

Death penalty critics would argue that the death penalty does nothing to deter people from committing violent murders. If this is true, then why do people fear the death penalty so much? Every day people confess to their crimes in the hope that they won’t get the death penalty for them. If the death penalty doesn’t deter criminals, then why did Luis Vera murder Rosa Velez? He burglarized her Brooklyn apartment then shot and killed her when she recognized him. He later admitted “Yeah, I shot her. She knew me and I knew I wouldn’t go to the chair” (Koch 561). This seems proof enough to me that the death penalty deters criminals. I think John McAdams says it best. If we execute murderers and there is in fact no deterrent effect, we have killed a bunch of murderers. If we fail to execute murderers, and doing so would in fact have deterred other murders, we have allowed the killing of a bunch of innocent victims. I would much rather risk the former. This, to me, is not a tough call (McAdams). I think that the main thing that would boost the deterrent effect of the death penalty would be to use it more often. 500 people where sentenced to death between 17 and 16. Of those 500 people only 58 people where actually executed (DPIC). That is only one execution for every 1600 murders in the United States, which means that the possibility of someone being put to death if they kill someone is extremely low (Sharp). If we increased the possibility of being executed, then we would increase the deterrent effect that the death penalty has.

What would you do if Osama Bin Laden walked into the room right now? Most people would say they would kill him for the crimes he committed against our country. This is the same thing that the family’s and friends of most murder victim’s feel about the person that took their loved one away from them. Then the anti-death penalty activists complain that the death penalty is cruel and unusual. They don’t like the quick and painless death that is awaiting the convicted murderer. They cite the way the prisoner is treated, the way he has to wait for the inevitable. I hope that this is the most terrifying experience of his/her life. While it is not possible to let victims family’s personally strangle the murderer, they will know that the killer felt, at least a small part, the fear that their victims felt just before they where brutally killed. Is the death penalty barbaric? No raping, beating, torturing and killing people is barbaric. Fast, effective, painless execution of someone convicted of the aforementioned crimes is not barbaric; it is justice.

In conclusion, I hope that next time you hear about a death penalty being carried out that you will be able to see through the media about the murderer being a victim, and remember who the real victim’s are. The death penalty is justice; it is not wrong. Think about the horrible crimes that the person committed to get himself on death row and remember that they brought this upon themselves. I value human life, and the best way to preserve it is to send a message to those people that would seek to destroy it; we will not tolerate murder.

This book is written by the editors of Time-Life Books being published in 1. There are168 pages of wonderful information which describe in detail the Viking’s way of life. Rather than having an “author” this book is part of a series of books from Time Life which has two lead editors which are the closest to authors listed in this book or any other places I searched.

This Viking book is similar to the textbooks we use in the event of a knowledge party where we recite everything written down in notes and ink for the purpose of taking test which we will be “eternally graded for.” Of course this book is about those rough and tough Vikings (not Minnesota & Warren Moon or my elementary alma mater’s mascot Vann Vikings) which changed the course of Western Europe in more than one way. Though written in textbook format, the book serves up a more colorful portrayal of one of the, most remarkable groups of people in history to study. Within the book are several biographies on well known Viking leaders such as King Harald Bluetooth and profiles of Viking war tactics or special stories like the common practice of Viking chieftains to employ a class of rabid warriors known as “berserkers.”

The history of the Viking conquests and subsequent raids of Europe was all happening during a wide time span beginning some 00-00 years after the fall of Rome ending in the mid Middle Ages. The majority of the events take place between the th and 14th centuries. Other major world events that occurred during the prime years of the Vikings include the Carolingian Renaissance, Crusades, reformation of the Catholic Church, and expansion of Islam into India. We have studied a lot of the things about Scandinavian Vikings such as their savage and barbaric ways of burning and pillaging whole cities at a time. The area of northern England set aside as the Dane law was mentioned significantly in this book along with the attempts of the Frankish kings (Charles the Fat) to buy off ruthless people. Various different tribes of Vikings were discussed in this book such as the Norsemen and Dubliners profiling the places they inhabited over Europe such as Scotland, England, Ireland, Norway, France, Denmark, Germany, Greenland and several other countries in Northwestern Europe. The Vikings were so ruthless the Church had a hard time trying to send Bishops and Priests to the places inhabited or invaded by the Vikings.

The book follows a basic chronological history of the barbarians. It begins by describing the Scandinavian area during the collapse of the Roman Empire during the 5th century. It is believed that ancestors of the infamous Vikings are the Norse people and many of their tactics were applied to the later successors in the following of trade routes and boat building techniques. As mentioned earlier the book is written the format of a text book and skips around offering bits and pieces of random information about the Vikings in addition to the essentials. There were many articles about Viking burials, graphic descriptions of murders, and Viking tools and cultural life.

The book did an excellent job of placing me, the reader, in the cabin of a massive Gostad Viking sailing vessel sailing down the Baltic Sea on the way to my annual raid of Paris singing merry hymns of companionship envisioning what I could loot from the city’s villagers. A connection with the Vikings allows the reader to display the masculine and insensitive side in us all.

I encountered an author that tries to pass the Vikings off as more of a group of eclectic people that shared ideas as they bounced from culture to culture. There is a lot of emphasis on the good things or benefits of the Vikings on our global society somewhat similar to the attitude taken towards Robin Hood. From my observations I could find no clear thesis but one idea ran exceedingly consistent throughout the book. One consistent theme in the book was that the Vikings were one of the most innovative and powerful groups of people in Europe going into the ranks somewhere behind the Greeks and Romans. The author tries to pass off the Vikings for innovators as he accounts an Arab visitor to a Viking community noting, in amazement, freeness of women in society by saying “The right to divorce belongs to the women” and “wife divorces whenever she wishes.”

I enjoyed reading the book since it was an action packed, book overflowing with detail. The book presented not just facts, but riveting accounts of scientific discoveries and historic breakthroughs that have led to the determination of these facts. Therefore, the painstaking work of salvaging ships and excavating burial mounds is clearly detailed, and giving a full explanation so that a conclusion can be drawn from the discovery. Text and excellent-quality photographs display how a 10th-century skull, combined with 0th-century laser and computer technology, can bring us face to face with the eerie likeness of a man dead a thousand years. The book does a good job of statement and answer of its own question, analyses, and conclusion all in one. The great thing about this book is that anyone can appreciate it if you just are interested in adventure and faintly like history. My previous non-fiction books were written on a more professional historian level therefore isolating the book to small audience. This is a quick and fast reader easily keeping you fixated on the interesting stories, somewhat like Sunday issue of the newspaper.

One gruel account of Norsemen Vikings crashing a holy feast day will stick with me forever. “With unconscionable savagery, Lambert’s Viking mercenaries fell upon the celebrants and hacked them to pieces. The invaders slew the bishop at the altar of his own cathedral and then set the bell tower aflame.”

During the Civil War both the north and the south had separate goals and ideas for winning the war. The South used slaves because they provided a cheap source of labor and because slaves knew their place on the social chain. On the other hand the North had their own reasons for war. The North wanted to preserve the union and of course demolish slavery.

Differences over slavery led to what is known as the Civil War. Southerners joined together to reform the Confederate States of America because they were concerned that the federal government would act against slavery. President Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy wanted Southern Independence.

Immediately following the Civil War was the reconstruction, which lasted from 1865-1877. President Abraham Lincoln announced his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction on December 8, 186. This proclamation stated that the union and confederacy would be reunited. Although the North was fighting to free the slaves the Proclamation did not offer the slaves any rights. Because of this flaw the Radical Republicans in congress, who wanted reconstructed

states to guarantee African Americans equal rights, aborted Lincoln’s plans for reconstruction.

Andrew Johnson, a former slaveholder, was Abraham Lincoln’s successor. After President Lincoln was killed, the destiny of the Union was up to President Johnson. Johnson blamed individual southerners instead of entire states for leading the South to secession. Johnson was determined to gain support from the South.

During the Presidential Reconstruction Johnson granted amnesty and pardon, including restoration of property rights, except slaves, to all confederates who pledged loyal to the union and support for emancipation. Johnson granted about 100 pardons a day totaling around 0% of those who applied. At the end of the Presidential Reconstruction Johnson was still in power and the same people in the South were also in power.

During Congressional Reconstruction radical and moderate Republicans took control of Reconstruction early in 1867. Congress passed their first Reconstruction act which divided the South into five military districts which were subjected to martial law. The southern states were required to call new constitutional conventions elected by

universal manhood suffrage. Also the Tenure of Office Act was passed to limit President Johnson’s power.

From 1870-187 he Klu Klux Klan fought an ongoing terrorist campaign against Reconstruction governments and local leaders. The Klansmen employed violence to intimidate African Americans and white republicans. The Klu Klux Klan Act of April 1871 made the violent infraction of civil and political rights a federal crime punishable by the national government.

Throughout the years of 1870-1871 Congress passed the Enforcement Acts which were three acts designed to counter racial terrorism. These acts provided for federal supervision of voting, and authorized the President to send the army and to suspend the writ of habeas corpus in districts declared to be in a state of insurrection.

During the election of 176 the two running candidates were republican Rutherford B. Hayes, and democrat Samuel J. Tilden. Republicans charged Tilden with disloyalty during the war, income tax evasion, and close relations with powerful railroad interest. On Election Day Tilden received more of the popular votes, but republicans refused to give up. The republicans challenged the

Electoral College and Hayes won with a total of 165 electoral votes vs. Tilden with 184 electoral votes.

The North is said to have won the Civil War at Appomattox when Lee surrendered to Grant. But it is said to believe that the South holds the real victory over the Civil War. Just because the word slavery was abolished does not mean that the slaves were, nor did the battle end. The battle continued on and things were worse before they were better. And as for the Union, it did not come together until the year 164.

There are four main parts to the study of Social Darwinism all of which seemingly go hand in hand with our American history. The rules of Social Darwinism are as stated 1.) that government governs best which governs least, .) that sanctity of private property, .) wealth is a sign of divine favor, and 4.) “survival of the fittest” is a law of nature.

Trade Unionism is the acceptance of capital system, with workers organizing to bargain and conflict with business as equals for limited economic goals rather than remaking society. This ties in with rule one the government governs best which governs least. Instead of the workers turning to the government to help them, they turn

Desai

to their own employers instead of going through government to remake the way society works.

Rule two states - that sanctity of private property. If this is true, then the Indians did not get the fair share of this idea. The Indians caused no harm to anyone but white man still could not leave well enough alone. White man came in and used their weapons to wipe out the Indian tribes. There were a few other reasons why most of the Indians died out, but that was one of the more significant reasons. The Indians owned their land fair and square but white man did not care, they wanted the land all to themselves.

Money is a store of value. Some people have enough money to get dressed up and wear expensive gowns and go to glamorous balls six days a week for six weeks and not care at all about the poor. Rule three states - wealth is a sign of divine favor. This leads people to believe that they are ‘the chosen ones’ and God wanted them to be rich and that is why they are.

Unfortunately not everyone is so lucky. As rule 4 states - “survival of the fittest” is a law of nature. The miners in the west had to use techniques such as panning and placer mining to look for gold.

Some days they were lucky, other days they barely found enough gold to feed themselves for one day.

Social Darwinism ties into everyday life, not just American history. Many of these examples were from the period from Grant through Harrison II. These examples are only from a brief period of time. As we study history more in depth and in later years, more and more coincidences of Social Darwinism will surely surface.

The truth is everyone grows older, as each minute passes we grow one minute older and one minute closer to old age and ultimately death. We can’t escape that, it’s the nature of life but that doesn’t mean that’s the way life should be. I’m quite sure no one would mind finding that mystical fountain of youth and frankly who could blame them. The only things old age seems to bring is many health problems, less mobility, boredom, loneliness and lets face it death, not only for yourself but for those around you, your friends, family and partners.

In the year 000 Alice Crosser was kicked out of home by her own granddaughter and rejected by her son. She was 88, partially blind, a bit deaf and was probably suffering the early stages of dementia, reported The Age- Alice in blunderland 5/11/00. Her granddaughter and son both didn’t want their Mother living with them because she was a “4-hour hazard” as her son told The Age. When Alice arrived at the train station to meet her son, nobody was there to pick her up leaving her to wander aimlessly by herself. This horrifying situation shows the affect old age can have on a person and on their family. Many of the elderly don’t want to go onto Nursing homes but at the same time their children find it difficult to look after them as they are busy themselves and may not have time to look after their parents. And you can’t blame them for not wanting to go into a nursing home with all the stories you hear about them. The Age article, “The system is coming apart” reported that “…there are bad nursing homes where dull eyed residents reeking of urine sit all day staring at walls”, what kind of life is that? Not a kind most people would want to have during the last stages of their life. Anyone would admit this is a horrible situation, and the truth is, if we didn’t grow older it would be one we wouldn’t have to deal with.

You know you’re getting old when everything hurts. And what doesn’t hurt doesn’t work. This may be just a joke but it certainly rings true, as we grow older our bodies start to wear out. While when you are younger you may have been able run around for hours, when you reach old age you may find it hard just to get up in the morning. There are many health problems associated with old age including osteoporosis, dementia, strokes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, depression, diabetes Mellitus, cataracts, and constipation just to name a few. With the risk of all of these wouldn’t you rather stay young with a higher chance of staying healthy? And not only does your body start to go downhill, so does your mind. At first you may forget the occasional simple thing but many elderly people develop psychological problems and memory loss such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and depression. So not only might you not be able to move around like you used to in your past you may not even remember your past. It can’t be disputed that this is a good lifestyle and old age is not the way you want to spend your life.

How do you know your growing old? You sink your teeth into a steak and they stay there! Or a palm reader offers to read your face! Not only to you start to lose your health, mind, hearing and sight when you grow older you also begin to lose your looks. Your face starts to wrinkle and sag along with the rest of your body. And for that matter everyone starts to look more similar when they reach old age, how many little old ladies have you seen with a short perm and a blue rinse? How many old men have you seen who have gone bald with a hat on trying to cover it up? Probably quite a lot. Also these days more and more people are trying to cover up old age. Plastic surgery has become more popular, and face-lifts have almost become another way of life. No one wants to look old and if you could avoid it why wouldn’t you? There’s nothing good about going bald or having 0 cardigans in your closet that almost all look the same.

Custom writing service can write essays on The case against growing old

essay writing service

In the year 1 The Hobart Mercury reported that “1 in 10 elderly people are isolated to the extent that they have contact with people less than twice a week.” The problem is the older you get the more you start to lose those around you. The older person may have lost their partner who looked after them, and their friends of similar ages may have died as well leaving the elderly person alone, and if they are unable to leave the house often for medical reasons they may not have any contact with people at all. What kind of life is this for someone who needs help, support and care? Even more alarming is that sometimes up to a week or more passes before someone that has died is even found. Can anyone seriously argue that they would want his or her life to end up like that? Being home alone with no one to talk to and nobody having even known that you had passed away? And the alternative to living at home alone may be going into a nursing home, which most people want to avoid at all costs. A nursing home is like being trapped for many people with no freedom. This isn’t a much better alternative, and if we didn’t grow older we wouldn’t need to have alternatives.

One upside to growing old is time. Once you retire you have a lot more time and you can spend it however you like because you don’t have as many responsibilities. But once again the problem is when your health diminishes you can’t do all of the things you used to do. Going backpacking across central Australia won’t be that easy with that hip replacement and lets face it, you don’t see that many elderly people out there living up life. Most of the elderly people I know I see are more worried about getting to bed early than being out there doing the things they always wanted to do. And while garden club may be enjoyable for them, its not exactly the excitement you thought you would finally get to experience when you had the time. Also money is usually tight by the time you do retire because no one is working so the average person can’t afford to fly overseas even if they actually did want to.

But the truth is of course no one can stop aging it’s a part of life, impossible to ignore. But if you could wouldn’t you want to? How many people haven’t heard their Grandparents reminisce about the old days. Just the look on their faces tell you they wish they could be back there. Back when they could have more fun, run a race, dance all night and not have to worry about pulling a muscle or even falling, as falls are very common in the older age group. I’m sure at any moment they would gladly turn back the clock and would stop time altogether if they could. Growing older is not the way you want to end your life and if there was a way to slow it down or stop altogether growing old I know would take it!

In the essay “Gangstas,” Richard Rodriguez states how much he hates the way gangs act. He testifies that he dislikes their likes in music, their dress, and jargon. He uses photographer Joseph Rodriguez’s professional photographs of Hispanic Gangs to help prove his point. That the gangs are an over confident subhuman that is stuck in a street play that is not part of our world. A subhuman glorified in a fabricated world that evil is what puts hairs on a man’s chest. An allure that attracts the animal in all of us, women are attracted to this confident and powerful entity witch automatically gives a cretin amount of a sex appeal. Because of this fact, this capitalistic American society tries to make a buck on it. The media exploits this confidence and gives us endless amounts of adrenalin rushed ads in hopes of us buying in to this false world and in consequence giving the gangsters a certain amount of justification.

One photo has a baby’s dad helping her handle a gun. Another shot is three guys with shaved heads and tattoos. Two guys have their backs turned facing a friend that looks like he is giving them a watered down dress inspection. The third shot is a kid holding a picture of his dad, looking like he is lost in a concrete jungle. The caption with the photo, says that the kid’s dad is in jail. The last photograph in the series is a funeral for a baby with the family suffering over the baby’s open coffin. Richard says that the photographs do not tell the entire story about the East L.A. gangs. The inside story, the story that no one really knows except those people that are involved.

He says, “That these photographs don’t tell us about crack mothers or school that don’t work or pappy dead or in prison. Documentary without a hint of narrative comes dangerously close to the vision Diane Arbus saw in her madness. Children appear grotesque. Spawn of some hideous neighborhood (not ours) without trees or sun or air. A land of roaches and rats and unnatural mothers.”

The photos do tell a lot about what is going on in their lives. The series of shots that are shown with his essay have a cycle to them. A cycle of what happens living in a violent place and the outcome, “Death.”

The photograph of a gangster father helping his daughter hold a gun while his wife looks on with satisfaction is a little unsettling. You can see the seed of violence being planted early in this shot. The baby cannot even put both hands around the handle, but she is that much closer to bloodshed. A person can only imagine that this East L.A. ghetto is close to hell on earth. With people, shooting at each other because of bad drug deals and turf wars. The schools are a joke and barely habitable houses. There is very little work to go around so the people find other ways to make money. Either sell drugs or cheat the government out of unemployment and social security. With despair all around, I could see my mind would start to go crazy. Wondering why God would put me in such a place or why he chose me to be here instead of that other guy on the other side of town with hard working parents. Don’t you think, if a little older the baby in this photo feels she’s getting a bad deal? Her mom brought her into a community that shoots at her father. The baby might not have a dad when she wakes up the next day.

The cycle is fed with young men looking at their friends for support. They have to stick together to survive. If not, their life would end fast. In the photograph of the three guys with shaved heads and tattoos. Their friend looks like he is inspecting them, seeing if they have the uniform of their gang down. Are their heads freshly shaved, do they have tattoos that say where they are from? The friend looks like he is pleased with what he sees. A bunch of guys that have each other’s back ready to fight for life in a gun battle to the end. They are not afraid of death, death is inevitable. Life is hell and whatever fun they can find together is just icing on the cake.

What makes these men feel that they have to live this way? Taking the photo of the kid holding his dad’s picture, with the neighborhood kids in the background circling around the poor kid like vultures looking for fresh meat to exploit. His dad is in jail and has no role model to teach him what is right. The kid, probably will be influenced by his friends to be a part of the machine of gang life. In this machine, there is no way out. The innocent kid is trapped to live a life that is not intended for him. No kid should be forced to be a gangster, that’s not a right it’s a crime. The little boy has nothing to go on except the fact that gangs are the only way to survive. What can we do to break the cycle of this boy’s life? We can do a lot and we do a lot by allocating funds through taxes to pay for places to go for help. But, the kid would have to brake the cycle and say enough is enough. His friend that has been watching his back and looking for support from him, would have a different idea. Their eyes and ears when they are not looking, is going away. That is the problem! The kid grows up with this core bunch and has moral obligations to stay. The cycle is tuff and it takes a man with realistic morals to him self to realizes that his friends are just using him to stay alive.

The undeniable truth we all have to live with, is the fact we are going to die sometime in our lives. In the photograph of the baby in the open coffin and the family looking at his life less body. The caption that accompanies this shot says that his future ended abruptly by a drive by shooting. What a waste, this child could have had a chance to get out and become some one, but because of gang violence no one will ever know. The cycle has ended to a birth of a renewed hope that this will never end. This photo had a baby that perished, and not a gangster. What if it was a young gang member instead of the child was in the coffin? To parents their child will always be their little baby. The baby in the coffin signifies the bitter loss of any life and the cost of violence.

Richard say these photographs are just a moments of time with no meaning except a looking glass at what a gangster looks like. A person would not want to meet a gangster in person, because they might get shoot. Viewing these animals in a cage of a photograh is a better option. However, they are not animals, they are people like me. When I look at these photos from Joseph, I do not just see moments in time. I see a story of how an innocent person becomes a gangster and the brutal consequences of living around that kind of life.

Both of the short stories “Everyday Use”, by Alice Walker, and “The Yellow Wallpaper”, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, are written in first person point of view. This point of view gives the reader a lot of detail and description of the events or problems in the story. It also lets us know what the characters are thinking and doing throughout the story.

The first person point of view in “Everyday Use” really helps the reader to comprehend the predicaments that the eldest daughter creates. It also shows Mama and Maggie’s lack of oral skills but still shows their competence to survive on what they have. Mama’s descriptions in the beginning are full of detail and respect for her children and the items that have an “everyday use”. As Mama starts to give details about the house and Dee and Maggie and their financial status’, a picture starts to form. As Mama described herself she seemed strong and almost invincible. “I was always better at a man’s job” (1) she said. But later, as Dee came in the house and started taking Maggie and Mama’s things she seemed weak and subservient to Dee. Mama was as powerless as Maggie, watching her things go right out of the door. Those made Wangero seem not only strong but also stronger than Mama and that is why Maggie was so afraid of her. There was a great amount of respect lost for Mama as she built herself up only to let Wangero “walk” all over her. Near the end of the story as Mama finally decided to tell Wangero “no”, my respect for her returned. It takes a lot to say “no” to some people and you could tell that Mama had had enough. The first person point of view helped show Mama’s struggle to stand up to Wangero. Wangero left Maggie cowering in the corner, and then Mama came like a super hero and “saved” the day. Mama kept her promise to Maggie and told Wangero that she would have to do without the quilts. The point of view also helped illustrate how proud Maggie felt after the ordeal and how happily they spent the rest of the night without Wangero.

The first person point of view in the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” truly helps the reader to follow the narrator’s ongoing battle with her untitled ailment. As the story begins it is hard to tell that she is ill at all but as it unfolds it becomes more apparent in every entry. As she starts to make her judgments about her surroundings they all seem lucid. On the other hand, at the start of the story when she says “I would say a haunted house” (7), talking about the mansion she will be living in for the next three months, it does make her seem a bit peculiar to say the least. Now when she begins mentioning the wallpaper in her room it does make her seem mentally unstable. She states that the wallpaper is “revolting” and “a smoldering unclean yellow” which shows that she is not thinking clearly and is becoming a bit obsessive with the thought of the paper. As the story goes on she starts to enjoy the wallpaper’s company and states that “it dwells in my mind so” (1). Then near its end the narrator is consumed with the thought that there is a woman behind the pattern in the wallpaper showing that her mental state is worsening and is very apparent in her writings. She says things like, “I think that woman gets out in the daytime” and “I’ll tell you why-privately-I’ve seen her” (5). Her illness has obviously gotten the best of her and she can no longer suppress her ailment. The first person point of view helps show the narrator’s struggle to expose the wallpaper’s “mysteries”. She really is obsessed with the paper and it gets s the best of her in the end. Of the two narrators I find that the unnamed woman in “The Yellow Wallpaper” is more compelling because of her predicament. You feel sorry for her because her husband and her brother, both doctors, are completely ignorant of her disease and do nothing to help her but confine her to the house. She’s struggling to stay sane and be a mother but no one knows this except the reader and it leaves you feeling somewhat helpless. Either way you know that she needs treatment and she is not going to get better just sitting in her room and sleeping all day. She talks as if she is talking to no one else but the reader and leaves nothing out. Every detail of the room that we cannot see is mentioned so that we can feel her pain and thoughts. It is as if we are reporters, questioning her about the room and her problems and she wants us to feel for her and hate her oppressors.

Ludwig Van Beethoven has been an artist who has always been studied by many people throughout time. Not only have his works been analyzed, but his life has as well. Generally, his lifetime is divided into three style periods in which he composed music. I will be concentrating on the third style period (a complete listing of the works he composed during this time is attatched), which is generally thought of as lasting from 1815 until his death in 187 (Grout 56, Cooper 447). Before one looks at the works he composed during this time, it is important to give a brief overview of what was happening in his life at this time.

One of the largest issues plaguing Beethoven during this time was his health. During the third style period, he was continuously ill (which was not too uncommon throughout his life). A brief over view of his health during this time is as follows chronic lung and bowel inflammation, Colic and inflammation of the lungs in 1815, diagnosis of a “lung disease” in 1817, bedridden for six weeks with Rheumatic fever in 180, prolonged Jaundice in 181, bedridden again for six weeks for Thoracic Gout in 18, and a severe eye condition which came about in 18 and required him to stay in a darkened room and sleep with bandages over his eyes (Cooper 44). This is just a listing of some of the main problems which he had during this time. Beethoven was never in good health, especially during this time period (Cooper 44). Being bedridden for so many lengths of time and being in so much pain most likely had an affect on his work.

Another issue that affected his life during this time was the death of Beethoven’s brother and the consequent joint custody of his nephew (Cooper 1). In 1815, Carl died and left Beethoven with joint custody of his son, Karl (Cooper 1). Beethoven fought for full custody of Karl for over four years and in 1816 suffered from what would be thought of today as a mental breakdown (Cooper 1-14). This not only seemingly affected the way he wrote but also affected how much he composed during this time.

During the third style period, the characteristics of his music changed slightly. Beethoven’s music became more meditative, abstract, passionate and seemed to convey deep, inner feelings (Grout 56). This could also be in large part to the fact that by 1816 his hearing was completely gone (Grout 554-55). Some have said that one can find what seems to be mistakes and miscalculations in his music such as apparent clumsy harmonic progressions which could be due to his deafness (Cooper 46). This can be seen in the D major Cello Sonata, Op. 10 and Piano Sonata’s, Op. 10 and Op. 110 (Cooper 46). An emergence of a new style could be seen and he was becoming more of a risk taker, using melodic variations to express deep meditations (Solomon 6 & 7). One could see a highly concentrated exploration of contrapuntal and polyphonic texture in his music (Solomon 86). Extremes of pitches, large leaps and long sections of tension can also be heard in his music written during this time period (Cooper 45). A good example of this would be his String Quartet, Op. 15. In this piece the first violin plays large leaps and has a part that sounds tense, wild and almost demonic at times (Cooper 45).

In 1815 Beethoven wrote sonatas (No. 4 and 5, Op. 10) which began to show the changes he had in his mind (Scott 45). At the same time, Sonata No. 4 in C major still conveys Beethoven’s old unwillingness to write a slow movement for the cello (Scott 45-46). From about 1816 to about 1818 or 181 Beethoven was fairly unproductive in writing music (Cooper 1-14). It seems probable that this is due to the custody battle he was going through to win custody of his nephew from his sister in law. Of course, this was also right after the time of his apparent mental breakdown in 1816, which may have also been a factor in his unproductivity. The main works that he wrote in this time were two cello sonatas and a piano sonata and a string quintet arrangement of his C minor Piano Trio Op. 1, No. (Matthews 56). The works during this time were also very intimate, possibly not meant for a large audience to hear (Matthews 56). Beethoven began working on the first two movements of his Hammerklavier Sonata in 1817 after he had one his initial custody battle for his nephew (Cooper 8). The second half of this piece was completed during the time when his sister in law was filing an appeal of the decision (Cooper 8).

After 180, Beethoven began to write more music and in 184 he began to write more quartets. He wrote 5 quartets during this time Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 17, Quartet in A minor, Op. 1, Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 10, Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 11, and Quartet in F major, Op. 15 (which was written the year before his death) (Kerman -50). He began his first quartet of this period in 184 Quartet in E-flat major, op. 17 (Kerman 4). His thirteenth quartet (Quartet in B-flat Major, op. 10) he composed in 185 (D’Indy 107). The first movement of this quartet seemed to convey a conflict of two instincts gentleness and violence (D’Indy 107). The two instincts conveyed in that first movement seem to be no surprise as during this time Beethoven’s health was becoming progressively worse, and he had been living with his eye problem for almost two years now. The other quartet he composed at this time was his Quartet in A minor, Op. 1 (D’Indy 10). He began writing this quartet in 185, but did not finish until 186 due to yet another sickness wherein he had to be bedridden for a month (D’Indy 10). It is no surprise that this quartet contained a musical representation of a crisis and also contained some religious undertones (D’Indy 10). Maybe these religious undertones were there because he had an idea that his life was coming to an end shortly.

Shortly before his death in 186, Beethoven’s nephew attempted suicide. Those who witnessed the man coming to visit his nephew mistook him for a beggar (Cooper 445-46). It is said that he did not have a decent coat or even a decent shirt and appeared to be extremely ill (Cooper 446). It seems that his life came to a somewhat dismal ending. There is an account of Beethoven’s death which has, for the most part, been deemed true due to eye witness accounts. The following quote about Beethoven’s death is taken from page 08 of The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven by Alexander Wheelock Thayer

“…After Beethoven had laid unconscious…there came a flash of lightning accompanied by a violent clap of thunder, which garishly illuminated the death chamber. (Snow lay before Beethoven’s dwelling.) After this unexpected phenomenon of nature, which startled me greatly, Beethoven opened his eyes, lifted his right hand and looked up for several seconds with his fist clenched and a very serious, threatening expression…he let the raised hand sink to the bed, his eyes closed half-way…not another breath, not a heartbeat more…” (08).

Leader Industry Group Y

The actual strategy our group used that helped us to move forward in the growth of our company mainly appeared simplistic. Through careful formulation of strategy each period, we received results from which we needed to make changes for reaching our long-term goals. We started in a very competitive position with some positive leverage to move forward, and gradually stayed at a consistent base for our earnings, yet made some decisions which could have moved the company into a different direction making it harder to reach our overall goals in the longer term. Our starting position revealed that the company was in a fairly good state. Our goal at that point was to formulate a strategy to move us into a different market over the long term. We had an idea of where we viewed our company in the future, and therefore made some good and poor decisions to get to those targets.

Our starting position revealed that we had two products, both doing fairly well in the Sonite market. SYCA had very little inventory, so we vamped up the production of that product seeing the trends leaned toward our targeted market of purchasing from High Earners at 60% We mainly focused on SYCA due to a larger profit margin and higher sales predicted for that specific product. Our other product, SYGA, revealed high inventory, so we decreased production and increased advertising targeting Singles who showed growth over the next 5 periods. We also increased price to reflect the inflation rate and increased R & D to estimate what the Singles wanted for this product in the future. Overall, we did well in our planning for these products over periods 1-, as we boasted much sales and profit, which helped us initiate R & D for the Vodite market.

The immediate idea we aimed to reach included moving into the completely Vodite market. Specifically, we wanted to be an industry leader by being the first to introduce a new Vonite product. One thing I believe we could have done differently was to introduce that product sooner. We maintained the best position periods one through three/four to initiate the move for introducing the first product in the Vodite market because we had the biggest budget and strong Sonite products with steady revenue. Instead, we were thinking of using the strategy of having one of our close competitors enter the market first, so that we may save some of our budget as much of the research had been already done. Also, we figured that if we were second to introduce a product, we could tailor it to the response of the market which would be revealed. We had a huge budget that we could have used from the beginning to position ourselves better as being the only firm to introduce the first Vodite product. We waited too long until period 5 to enter the Vodite market, in which our close competitor also introduced a product.

One thing we didnt do well was to take our long-term view, and feed it with enough current product support to finance the company and make for a smooth market transition. We should have introduced more products in the Sonite market originally to continue to gain capital to use for Vodite introduction. We started out with a huge budget, but slowly watched it diminish given some poor decisions. Specifically, we were a bit too excited about the initial few periods and the fact that we were awarded the biggest budgets. We figured that we would be the only ones able to finance the R & D to introduce a new Vodite successfully. I realize that we used too many

funds in R & D, which came back as sunk costs, and still gave back little information as to where to target the product and to exactly whom. So, we guessed and thankfully were fairly accurate in that risky strategy. But given the introduction, we could have introduced the product in a small quantity aimed to the specifications that our target market, the Innovators, would purchase and still have been fairly on target without having to buy all the R & D that we spent. We were aiming to getting out of the Sonite market altogether, so formed a plan to transition our financial well-being from one market to the other was important, but given the risk of introducing a product in a new market, we should have saved funds for the future and for our existing brands which needed modification. We formed these decisions based on the trends that we anticipated for the next 5-year period.

Our second product introduced into the Vodite market, VYYY, was not very successful. It was geared toward the Followers according the exact specifications they wanted, but wasn’t selling. One reason was the efforts of our sales force as we had too little employees in that market for the product to be known to the public entity enough, so it wasn’t getting purchased. We were too conservative on those efforts as we felt using budget expenses toward R & D was more important. We should have placed more sales people into that targeted market, along with more money toward advertising.

As for our Sonite market presence, we started to neglect it too much and not pay particular attention to the needs and purchasing trends predicted for our targeted segments. We kept it too simple at having only two products consistently throughout the duration on all periods. We needed to introduce either more new product, or specifications changed to modify existing brands since as the Sonites started to move into the “dog” category, and were earning us very little profit, we had nothing else to help fuel funds for introducing products into the Vodite market. We were positioned all along in a good manner for moving into the Vodite market given our existing Sonite products which were consistently successful overall, and our huge budget, yet needed to plan in the short term better for making a healthy and smooth transaction into the Vodite market altogether.

Understanding our customers’ needs was very important, especially in developing the Sonite brand. We maintained understanding of their needs initially with our popular product SYCA, yet lost focus as we saw inventory grow. We should have made adjustments to the product and improve the current brand more rather than expect, as we did, that it’s past successful performance and knowledge of the product by the consumer would continue its success. As the Sonite market grew, our product didn’t match the trends of the market since other new products were introduced and taking much of the market share. We needed to predict this better for the continued success of the future market. This would have been easy to do if we allocated less funds to R & D of the Vodite market products, and spent more on maintaining success of our SYCA and SYGU to adjust the product needs to trends in customer demands. We ended up getting rid of the SYGG (formerly SYGU) product as we moved into the Vodite market, but this was quite costly during a time when we needed those funds for further development and promotion of our new Vodite brands VYDT and VYYY.

When we were “failing” to gain profit from sales in the Sonite market, we didn’t analyze enough if our clients liked the product, and therefore should we make more changes geared toward their product specifications and importance of those features. We neglected to analyze the research data we spent money on as we put most of our efforts toward R & D and analyzing the Vodite market introduction we were planning for period 5. Part of this I believe is attributed to the fact that our group made decisions together for all products, where we needed to split our efforts to focus on more key issues for each product we had in production and research.

Making sure our customers knew our product was out there was equally important, especially to the specific place it could be found. One thing we needed to do better was to make sure that our sales force was strategically placed in prime locations where our target market was found. Sometimes we were too conservative and placed people only exactly to the one target market we aimed to gain sales, while we should have spread them out slightly more. This would have been useful while tying in future trends better and understanding where our customers would gradually shift. Also, we needed to add more sales people in general as we had one of the lowest amounts of sales force. What happened as the markets grew, is we kept the same amount harping on our past success, yet the market was different and much larger as periods went by, and we should have adjusted better to that trend. I do not believe we had enough salespeople to let our product be known well enough for constant growth in sales given a saturation of products in the Sonite market.

Segmentation played a very important role in our initial success of our new Vodite product VYDT. We specifically aimed to gain sales from the Innovator group by using the guidelines for the specifications they wanted and aiming full efforts of the sales force toward that group and where they shopped. By specifically targeting a component of the market, it was possible to gain a large percentage of that market. The thing our group needed to do better, was to keep analyzing and modifying our product specifications to meet the changing demands of that specific customer. Also, it is possible to target a specific group according to their perceived product specifications, such as we did with our second Vodite brand VYYY, yet not have much initial success if their buying behavior and needs are not analyzed or accounted for. Therefore, segmentation for that product was only part of the whole picture we needed to analyze for the products initial success. Segmentation also was successful for us in looking at the place of distribution, such as specialty stores for SYCA and VYDT where we were confident our target market was shopping.

Production planning was another area I believe our team performed average. We had such great success for periods one through 5 with our Sonite brands, specifically SYCA, we ran production between 15-0% each period. We did well in predicting those trends and still didn’t have enough product available on the market to sell. However, we didn’t do well in planning once we saw a high inventory balance develop. We should have made modifications to our Sonite products at that time, specifically periods 5 through 7, as market perception of our product decreased given we introduced little change in the product specifications to meet consumer demands and the market overall was becoming saturated. Consumers had more choices to make, and they weren’t choosing our outdated models with a fairly high price.

Inventory disposal became somewhat of a problem for us in periods 6 and 7. We were gaining much inventory buildup of our Sonite brands, and did little to try to get rid of it prior to just deciding to sell it, which was fairly expensive. Those funds should could have been used more wisely on implementing a larger number of salespeople and/or advertising to boast our other products.

Pricing, we turned into a dog from a cash cow with both our Sonite products SYCA and SYGG. In not looking long term enough for the specific life of the product, we allowed it to make us little to no profit in the future since we didn’t really change or modify it and the cost of produce the product was yielding very little profit. We underestimated how much we needed the continued success of that product and the capital gained through its sales and net profit to fund the Vodite brand development.

Mass communication was something I think we needed to do better with in gaining sales. We had trouble placing additional sales force into the Vodite market with the introduction of VYYY, and needed to place a larger number of salespeople in the Followers at the Mass Market level, as our product wasn’t well received on its introduction.

Also, as known, the more we produced, the cheaper it was for our product SYCA, as the less it cost to produce that product. I think we initially used this concept well, yet we started to have a higher production cost and lower selling price, since we kept the price stagnant. We needed to change the selling price for our Sonite products, which were modified and made “better” as now they were differentiated from prior sales. We could have used the tool of selling price in many instances such as for SYCA in periods 1 through 5 when it was highly successful, to boost sales and revenue. Once again, we were so focused on spending cash on R & D, that we neglected some of these fine tuning measures (such as adjusting salespeople numbers, product specifications, and future production) to gain further market presence and sales.

Overall, I think we were successful in slowly entering the Vodite market to become that industry’s leader and make ourself well established. We dominated that market with our products VYDT and VYYY and were going to continue to grow in that market through introduction of another Vodite product ready to go to market in period 8. I think we positioned ourselves well in this market as being the first present and setting the market standards. However, we could have continued to use our Sonite brands more wisely to foster the Vodite brands. Overall, I believe we are well positioned for the future in the Vodite market and further company growth.

On September 11 001, a blow to the solidarity and security of our nation occurred the likes that it had not felt in over fifty years. There is not an American alive that will ever forget the tragedy that happened, all of us that can remember that day will always know exactly where and what we were doing when it happen. I was a Intelligence Analyst for the United States Marine Corps sitting at my desk watch the events unfold, all I could think of is how could this happen, and could we have prevented it. Being part of the Intelligence community it struck deep at the heart of what we do, if our job was done right we may have prevented it. Could we have? is the question that will be debated for years, was it the numerous agencies fault for overlooking signs and threats, or the bureaucratic layers and non-sense that tied the agencies down not allowing them to complete their mission.

The national as a whole missed a lot of the warning signs; the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1, the attack on the USS Cole, and the bombing of the Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. All of those should have woke us up but it took the destruction of an icon of the United State for the population to see there was a problem. On September 11, the four concentric circles of American security failed the Central Intelligence Agencys foreign intelligence together with the State Department visa screening; the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Naturalization Services domestic security, and the Federal Aviation Administrations airport security. The FBI had no procedure for disseminating useful information for analysis within its organization let alone to outside agencies (Cohen). The CIA also created a major lapse in intelligence reporting, when it failed to tell the FBI about movements of terror suspects (Shuger). The FAA allowed the hiring of substandard security personnel, succumbing to ACLU pressure the FAA waived criminal record checks of security personnel (Cohen). The INS failed on several levels when the mastermind of the Trade Center bombing, Ramzi Yusuf, entered the U.S. with a false passport, he was caught by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, but was released because of a lacked space in the local holding facility.

The bureaucracy that helped aid the lapses in the intelligence cycle, that can be layed at the feet of many different individuals. Starting with an176 executive order bans assassinations of foreign leaders, and the killing of foreign national without a presidential order called a “lethal finding,” in effect (Thomas). With agencies tied down by politicians the ability to “eliminate” a problem before it gets out of hand becomes very difficult. In 15 the guidelines promulgated by then-Director of Central Intelligence John Deutsch, prohibited the engagement of foreign intelligence informants who may have previously been involved in human rights violations (Cohen). The FBI leadership has also had a hand in the problem of intelligence gathering, according to the reforms recently announced by FBI Director Robert Mueller, there will be more coordination between the Bureau and the CIAbut in Washington. Contacts between street agents and local CIA agents that are not explicitly approved by FBI HQ in Washington are still frowned upon (Shuger).

Finally are the pieces of intelligence that slipped through the cracks do to the delay in the intelligence cycle. For example are the collected transmissions that point toward something happening around /11 did not reach the proper people till after the attacks. Those reports include intercepted messages with phrases like “There is a big thing coming,” “They’re going to pay the price” and “We’re ready to go.” In the bureaucracy of spying, 4-hour or 48-hour time lags are not unusual (Thomas). Turf battles, lack of cultural and linguistic skills, and bureaucratic stupidity all contributed to a historic failure of the U.S. securitys three circles of defense. The price we paid was huge. (Cohen).

There are many problems in the current system that needs to be solved. Agencies need to encourage lateral communication, to allow for better distribution of intelligence data (Shuger).

Macbeth is a tragic story of the struggle between good and evil. One can blame

the weird sisters, or Lady Macbeth for the evil deeds done but I believe that Macbeth

himself was ultimately responsible for his own downfall. I also believe that you can’t

determine his downfall by one single cause but rather three forces supernatural, external,

and internal. In my essay I will explain each of these forces, and I will refer to specific

lines of the play to give you a clear image of my points.

The beginning of the play suggests that dark supernatural forces will be involved.

Three weird sisters are preparing a surprise for Macbeth, a surprise that in the end costs

him his life. These three witches’ predictions play a very important role in Macbeth

pursuing with evil deeds. The witches are the first to unleash Macbeths’ deep desires by

ensuring him he is to become King in the near future. This starts by a prediction of

becoming Thane of Cawdor. After this almost impossible prediction becomes true

Macbeth decides that perhaps it is not so far fetched that he will become King. His royal

dreams and ambition begin to take over his good side. The dark forces “win him with

honest trifles to betray in deepest consequence.” Not only do they make him think about

murdering Duncan, but they also bring him to think of murdering Banquo, and his son by

saying that Banquo’s children will be kings. Throughout the whole play dark supernatural

forces trick and deceive Macbeth. In Act IV the apparitions play with words and

convince him to be “bloody, bold, and resolute”, “to have no fear”, and that “for none of

woman born shall harm Macbeth.” This gives Macbeth confidence to murder more

victims, and is left at the end with no hope.

After the witches’ awaken his desire of becoming King, his wife begins to push

Macbeth towards the real act of murdering Duncan. This would be the external force.

Lady Macbeth thinks she knows exactly what her husband wants to become King, and

so she decides that she has to force her husband to do what he would never do without

her support to kill Duncan. She never really tries to gain much for herself and never

mentions that she wants to be Queen. She wants glory for him, not for herself. Lady

Macbeth reminds me of a mother who forces her child to homework he doesn’t want to

do because she wants him to be successful in life. She never pays attention to Macbeths

thoughts or opinions, much like a mother would not care about her child’s opinion on

their ‘stupid’ homework. Macbeth’s decision to “proceed no further in this business” was

not thought of as a possible outcome by her. Lady Macbeth uses all methods she can to

convince her husband to murder Duncan. She asks him if he is a man, and tells him that

he will be “so much more a man” after murdering Duncan. Lady Macbeth used her

husband’s feelings towards her, his bravery, his ambitious nature, and his desires as

resources to do what she thinks in the end will bring him success, and happiness.

Witches’ and Lady Macbeth definitely had influenced Macbeth to kill Duncan

and continue with terrible murders however, Macbeth was not a weak puppet that others

could control easily. He was a brave strong man who seemed could resist outside

influences and make his own decision. Why did he allow his wife and witches’ to

convince him to do what he knew was the wrong thing to do? I think that the answer is

that he wanted to be convinced. In fact, Macbeth began to think about becoming King

even before he met the witches. This could explain his unusual reaction after the

witches’ prophecies. As Banquo had said “Good sir, why do you start, and seem to fear

things that do sound so fair.” Macbeth is afraid and feels guilty after the great predictions

of becoming Thane of Cawdor, and King. The only explanation is that the witches guess

his thoughts and catch him thinking about killing Duncan. Another piece of evidence that

supports Macbeths’ thought of murder is the reaction of Lady Macbeth after she reads

her husbands’ letter. She immediately thinks murder even though murder was not

mentioned in the letter. Perhaps Macbeth had been thinking about murdering Duncan for

awhile and had discussed it with his wife. I think that his dark side had been battling his

good side from before the play. After the evil side of Macbeth receives help from the

witches and from his wife it completely takes over his good side and can now act

independently with no help from the outside. The murders of Banquo, and Macduff’s

family were done completely on his own with no advice either two forces.

In conclusion, even though Lady Macbeth, and the witches played an important

role in convincing Macbeth to kill Duncan, internal force was the strongest of all three. It

was Macbeth that agreed, Macbeth who committed the murder, and Macbeth who

continued the bloodshed. However it’s very unlikely that all the events in the play would

have happened if it were not influenced by Lady Macbeth, and the witches. It was the

fatal combination of all three that ended this story so tragically.

While I was reading On Death And Dying by Elisabeth Kübler Ross I noticed that I kept remembering the time I lost someone close to me. I noticed now that I was acting rather unjust toward the people that loved me. This is what I was thinking about while I read the third chapter called First Stage Denial and Isolation. The fourth chapter of this book, Second Stage Anger, was like that time I was angry with my parents for not letting me say goodbye to my cat. The third step was bargaining. To me the process of bargaining is thinking why can’t they take someone else instead of me or whoever has died. In my opinion this is a very selfish moment in the grieving process. But I guess I never thought of it that way or I don’t think like the average person. Well I remember being really depressed and crying. The fourth step in this book is depression. Which is where you do all your crying and then the remembering of that special someone. You probably feel like dirt and might want to join that person in their time. This is a critical time for a person and a person with problems could kill themselves. The last stage is Acceptance. This is when you finally realize that everything is okay and you have finally realized that what happened is a part of nature. Some people at this time feel that maybe it really wasnt their time to die and might never get over it. Some people eventually mature and well they end up knowing that death is a natural process.
