184 is a novel based on the Big Brother. The story follows the life of Winston Smith. He is an adult, who lived through the change from capitalism to the Big Brother. The story shows how the Big Brother controls people’s lives.

The Big Brother is a type of government, in which they are the supreme power and omnipresent. They constantly watch over the people. You are punished for thinking of a crime of for thinking of rebelling against the government. The Big Brother arrests and tortures people who are rebellious. The goal of it is to show people that they are always right and to always be trusted. The Big Brother erases people’s memory and tries to change the past. They can watch every move and monitor every feeling. The government sets up monitors in every room, so they can see and hear everyone’s actions. They send spies out to punish the “unworthy” and they rewrite textbooks and newspapers, so that their predictions were accurate.

184 follows the life of Winston Smith. He was born before the time of the Big Brother. During his adulthood, he reminisces of past times. He does not believe in the power of the Big Brother and often breaks their code of conduct. He tries to find a way around their beliefs. Smith tries to seek out the Brotherhood, an alleged anti-Big Brother group. He also hides out an in “unmonitored” room, secretly has an affair, remembers accurate past experiences, and writes in a journal. Smith spends most of his life plotting against the Big Brother and thinking of ways to go back to his childhood and the truth. In the end, 184 shows the power of the Big Brother. He is taken in by the thought police, who have been secretly spying on him. He is tortured by them and forced into believing into their system of government. Through brainwash and abuse, they convince him that his old memories are false. Smith begins to believe in the Big Brother and he becomes mindless just like all of those that he once despised. He begins to form new memories, forgets everything before the Big Brother, and works to believe everything that the government is currently telling him.

184 shows how people can eventually become mindless and can be easily controlled by a ruling government. This book was written in 14 and showed the direction that Orwell felt the nation was going towards.
