The story is about the concept of invisibility.

First of all, the white people are blind. They see what they want to see rather than who or what they are. Invisibility suggests the unwillingness of others to see the individual as a person. One person becomes invisible because another is blind. Invisibility, in this sense, has a strong sense of racial prejudice. White people willfully ignore blacks and they often do not see black people as individual human beings.

Second, the narrator is blind. The narrator is blinded by his eagerness to succeed and gratefully accepts the briefcase he is given after his speech. He is unable to view the fight he is forced to participate in as a form of entertainment so much as humiliation for other¡¦s entertainment. After the battle, the narrator receives those rewards and states ¡§I was overjoyed; I did not even mind when I discovered the gold pieces I had scrambled for were brass pocket tokens¡K¡¨ He is blind to accept the funny rewards, to accept the white people¡¦s humiliation and repression. In addition, he is blind to the reality of his situation. He thinks the white men will help him to achieve his goals and eventually he will get to where he wants to be. What he does not realize is that he is doing everything the white people want him to. In fact, they do not take him seriously and they never will.

Last of all, the black people are blind. The battle represents the internal fighting by black people; they do not unite against a common oppressor, instead they fight one another to gain money and status. Even though the fighters are battered and humiliated, they forget this when they see the money. The narrator states ¡§I trembled with excitement, forgetting my pain. I would get the gold and the bills. I would use both hands. I would throw my body against the boys nearest me to block them form the gold.¡¨ Once again, the black youths fight against each other and not with each other.
