“To be, or not to be, that is the question.” This is the question that lingers in Hamlet’s mind through the entire play. Should I live or should I die, should I take revenge for my fathers death? These are all issues that Hamlet battles within himself. Hamlets indecision is followed by inaction. The reason for this struggle with indecision can be based on many factors or on a combination of a few; the struggle with his inner, moral and subconscious thoughts.

Illustrated through his speeches and soliloquies Hamlet proves to be a person of thought. He wants the murder of the king to be perfect! The people of Denmark must know what Claudius has done! Hamlet spends too much time planning and not enough time doing, making everything more complex. His need to analyze the situation and prove everything right brought him more and more away from his action. Hamlet doubts himself and his plans wondering if what he wants to do is justifiable.

In the first act Hamlet receives a visit from his dead father, telling Hamlet that Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, murdered him and that he should seek revenge. At that point, Hamlet seems eager to take Claudius’ life, but before he can do so Hamlet ponders. In Act II Hamlet says to himself, “The sprits that I have seen/ Maybe a devil and the devil hath power/ T’ assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhaps/ out of my weakness and my melancholy/ As he is very potent with such sprits/ Abuse me to damn me. (., 67-6) Then in Act III Hamlet comes up with the idea of a play within a play to prove whether or not Claudius is guilty for his father’s death. Reenacting the death of his father in front of Claudius brought what Hamlet hoped and planned. Claudius’ exit from the play within a play and his facial reaction to the staged murder showed that he was guilty.

Now, at that point the audience must think that was the moment when Hamlet decided to avenge his father’s death, but the play with in a play brought on another thought for Hamlet to contemplate over. Hamlet’s discovery that Claudius is guilty brought no evidence to present to the people of Denmark. It was not enough that he himself knew that truth of his uncle’s sinful act he must find evidence. Hamlet has the opportunity to kill Claudius when he is alone in the church praying for forgiveness, but Hamlet does not act upon that chance. His constant excuses disallow him to act upon his thoughts, is brought on when Hamlet realizes that if he Kills Claudius in a church he will be sent to heaven and not to hell. “A villain kills my father, and for that/ I, his sole so this same villain send/ to heaven. (., 80-8) A further excuse that Hamlet play not to murder his uncle is for the moral purpose that it is dishonorable to kill someone in a church. “No place indeed should murder sanctuaries”. Another small reason for Hamlet’s indecision and inaction are based on his subconscious mind. He has a desire to do exactly what his uncle has done. If this is true, Hamlet cannot act because he is fighting against his subconscious.

Hamlet is a very complex character and clearly has many different things going on in his mind. It was the combination of these three things that made it so hard for Hamlet to overcome what his mind was telling him to do or not to do. The fact that these three examples take place in his conscious as well as subconscious mind is what makes it so clear as to why Hamlet could not make his decision. He had factors from each side of his mind, this is why his mind had such control over him and held him back. Finally when he had no more reasons in his conscious mind not to kill Claudius he could finally overcome his indecision.
