What kind of story is Beowulf? Beowulf is a story of heroes, monsters, battles, and death. All four of these things play a role in the theme this story, the theme of good versus evil. The theme of good versus evil is evident in the story but one is the victor over the other. Good prevails over evil in Beowulf, and it is evident in the fights between Beowulf and Grendel, Mother Grendel, and the dragon.

Before a person can see that good prevails over evil they must see what is evil and what is good. The first monster Grendel is characterized as an infernal creature, a fiend of hell, ‘hell’s captive’, an alien spirit, a companion of ‘devils’, and indeed a devil himself (Parks). Beowulf comes as a God sent deliver to cleanse Herot (Goldsmith). Beowulf represents the good while Grendel represents the evil. Beowulf is here to save the people of Herot while Grendel is here to terrorize them.

In the story while Grendel’s man-eating habits dehumanize him, he exhibits human life habits and may have mastered certain human arts (Parks). This suggests that that while Grendel goes to Herot eating and killing men, it isn’t because he is an obtuse monster, but that he is an intelligent monster who is fully aware of his actions. Grendel wants to ravage like a predator, whereas Beowulf insists on contesting with him like a conspecific adversary (Parks). Grendel is evil because he wants to be and Beowulf knows that. For Grendel no savage assault quenches his lust for evil (Raffel 42). In battle Beowulf defeated Grendel, which is an example of good prevailing over evil. Beowulf bold and strong-minded had driven affliction off, purged Herot clean (Raffel 49).

The next fight is between Beowulf and Mother Grendel. In keeping with the habits of her clan, she too introduces herself to the Danes predatorily (Parks). In the speech to Beowulf the next morning Hrothgar characterizes her assault as an act of vengeance within a feud (Parks). Just like her son she too chooses to be evil and is not this way because she is too obtuse to realize her actions. The strife with the Grendel kin is part of the uncompoundable feud between God’s people and the race with Cain (Goldsmith). This is a battle between good and evil. In the end Beowulf slaughters her with her own sword (Parks). Beowulf is that noble protector of all seamen (Raffel 54). Again a person can see that Beowulf, who represents good, prevails over Mother Grendel, who represents evil.

The next fight was with the dragon. The dragon is quite dissimilar from his monstrous foregoers (Parks). The dragon destroys Geatland with ruthless violence and evident contempt for the opposition (Parks). The dragon finds satisfaction in possessing his hoard and in the terror and suffering that he can cause (Goldsmith). This suggests that the dragon is similar to the Grendel kin in that he is evil because he wants to be.

Beowulf states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now but I will fight again”, (Raffel 54-55). Beowulf cannot despite his boast defeat his opponent single handily (Parks). The dragon dies only when Beowulf and Wiglaf team up (Parks). Wiglaf serves as good’s, which is Beowulf, right hand. The dragon and Beowulf both die but good still prevails because the bad is still dead. True Beowulf died too but Wiglaf who is also good is still alive. Wiglaf’s mind was made up; he raised his yellow shield and drew his sword (Raffel 57). Beowulf died trying to protect people from bad and Wiglaf took that chance and lived.

The poem clearly shows good prevailing over evil in the three fights. For the heroic service, which Beowulf means to perform, is for the benefit of the human community to whom he broadcasts these noble sentiments, not for his monstrous (Parks). The poem stands as a mighty expression of the human spirit (Parks). This poem shows Beowulf as a hero and his opponents as a product of evil. Although in the end he dies so does all of his opponents thus showing good prevails over evil.
