Plato and Aristotle, two philosophers in the 4th century, hold polar views on politics

and philosophy in general. This fact is very cleverly illustrated by Raphaels School of

Athens (1510-11; Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican), where Plato is portrayed looking up

to the higher forms; and Aristotle is pointing down because he supports the natural

sciences. In a discussion of politics, the stand point of each philosopher becomes an

essential factor. It is not coincidental that Plato states in The Republic that Philosopher

Rulers who possess knowledge of the good should be the governors in a city state. His

strong interest in metaphysics is demonstrated in The Republic various times for

example, the similes of the cave, the sun, and the line, and his theory of the forms.

Because he is so involved in metaphysics, his views on politics are more theoretical as

opposed to actual. Aristotle, contrarily, holds the view that politics is the art of ruling

and being ruled in turn. In The Politics, he attempts to outline a way of governing that

would be ideal for an actual state. Balance is a main word in discussing Aristotle

because he believes it is the necessary element to creating a stable government. His less

metaphysical approach to politics makes Aristotle more in tune with the modern world,

yet he is far from modern.

Platos concept of what politics and government should be is a direct result of

his belief in the theory of forms. The theory of forms basically states that there is a

higher form for everything that exists in the world. Each material thing is simply a

representation of the real thing which is the form. According to Plato, most people

cannot see the forms, they only see their representation or their shadows, as in the

simile of the cave. Only those who love knowledge and contemplate on the reality of

things will achieve understanding of the forms. Philosophers, who by definition are

knowledge lovers, are the only beings who can reach true knowledge. This concept has

to be taken a step further because in The Republic, Plato states that philosophers should

be the rulers since they are the only ones who hold the form of the good. Plato seems to

be saying that it is not enough to know the forms of tables or trees, one must know the

greatest form--form of the good--in order to rule. The reasoning is if you know the

good, then you will do the good. Therefore, philosopher rulers are by far the most apt

to rule.

In The Republic, Plato builds around the idea of Philosopher Rulers. Even

though it is not his primary point, it certainly is at the core of his discussion of the ideal

state. The question that arises is, Why do you need ideal states which will have

philosophers as rulers? There are many layers to the answer of this question. The first

thing is that a state cannot be ideal without having philosophers as rulers. This answer

leads to the question, Then why do you need ideal states to begin with? The Republic

starts with a discussion of Justice which leads to the creation of the ideal state. The

reason why an ideal state is needed is to guarantee the existence of Justice. This does

not mean, though, that there cannot be states without Justice. Actually, Plato provides

at least two reasons why the formation of a state cannot be avoided. These are 1.

human beings are not self-sufficient so they need to live in a social environment, and .

each person has a natural aptitude for a specified task and should concentrate on

developing it (The Republic, pp 56-6). Although a person is not self-sufficient, a

composition of people--a state--satisfies the needs of all its members. Furthermore,

members can specialize on their natural fortitudes and become more productive

members of society.

Beowulf: Good Versus Evil

What kind of story is Beowulf? Beowulf is a story of heroes, monsters, battles, and death. All four of these things play a role in the theme this story, the theme of good versus evil. The theme of good versus evil is evident in the story but one is the victor over the other. Good prevails over evil in Beowulf, and it is evident in the fights between Beowulf and Grendel, Mother Grendel, and the dragon.

Before a person can see that good prevails over evil they must see what is evil and what is good. The first monster Grendel is characterized as an infernal creature, a fiend of hell, ‘hell’s captive’, an alien spirit, a companion of ‘devils’, and indeed a devil himself (Parks). Beowulf comes as a God sent deliver to cleanse Herot (Goldsmith). Beowulf represents the good while Grendel represents the evil. Beowulf is here to save the people of Herot while Grendel is here to terrorize them.

In the story while Grendel’s man-eating habits dehumanize him, he exhibits human life habits and may have mastered certain human arts (Parks). This suggests that that while Grendel goes to Herot eating and killing men, it isn’t because he is an obtuse monster, but that he is an intelligent monster who is fully aware of his actions. Grendel wants to ravage like a predator, whereas Beowulf insists on contesting with him like a conspecific adversary (Parks). Grendel is evil because he wants to be and Beowulf knows that. For Grendel no savage assault quenches his lust for evil (Raffel 42). In battle Beowulf defeated Grendel, which is an example of good prevailing over evil. Beowulf bold and strong-minded had driven affliction off, purged Herot clean (Raffel 49).

The next fight is between Beowulf and Mother Grendel. In keeping with the habits of her clan, she too introduces herself to the Danes predatorily (Parks). In the speech to Beowulf the next morning Hrothgar characterizes her assault as an act of vengeance within a feud (Parks). Just like her son she too chooses to be evil and is not this way because she is too obtuse to realize her actions. The strife with the Grendel kin is part of the uncompoundable feud between God’s people and the race with Cain (Goldsmith). This is a battle between good and evil. In the end Beowulf slaughters her with her own sword (Parks). Beowulf is that noble protector of all seamen (Raffel 54). Again a person can see that Beowulf, who represents good, prevails over Mother Grendel, who represents evil.

Buy Beowulf: Good Versus Evil term paper

The next fight was with the dragon. The dragon is quite dissimilar from his monstrous foregoers (Parks). The dragon destroys Geatland with ruthless violence and evident contempt for the opposition (Parks). The dragon finds satisfaction in possessing his hoard and in the terror and suffering that he can cause (Goldsmith). This suggests that the dragon is similar to the Grendel kin in that he is evil because he wants to be.

Beowulf states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now but I will fight again”, (Raffel 54-55). Beowulf cannot despite his boast defeat his opponent single handily (Parks). The dragon dies only when Beowulf and Wiglaf team up (Parks). Wiglaf serves as good’s, which is Beowulf, right hand. The dragon and Beowulf both die but good still prevails because the bad is still dead. True Beowulf died too but Wiglaf who is also good is still alive. Wiglaf’s mind was made up; he raised his yellow shield and drew his sword (Raffel 57). Beowulf died trying to protect people from bad and Wiglaf took that chance and lived.

The poem clearly shows good prevailing over evil in the three fights. For the heroic service, which Beowulf means to perform, is for the benefit of the human community to whom he broadcasts these noble sentiments, not for his monstrous (Parks). The poem stands as a mighty expression of the human spirit (Parks). This poem shows Beowulf as a hero and his opponents as a product of evil. Although in the end he dies so does all of his opponents thus showing good prevails over evil.

Our Dame Julie Andrews hasn't always been Mary Poppins or Fraulein Maria. She started out on Broadway playing the role of Polly Brown in The Boyfriend. Her second show was My Fair Lady, where she left her mark and made Audrey Hepburn look like a whiny school girl. Camelot was her last show. That was all before Walt Disney discovered her and turned her into our favorite magical nanny. Before Robert Wise made her our fearless governess.

Julie was only 19 when she moved from her hometown of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England to New York. She had been asked to play Polly Brown, a flapper of the 1920's. She did, and was extremely happy in her career. It was very different than the stage she was used to in London. New York was a large change, it still is. She bought an apartment with a good friend and coworker. They took turns cooking and cleaning. She stayed on the show for only a year when she was asked to play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.

My Fair Lady's opening night was March 31st, 1956. She was 20 years old. Perfect for Eliza's age, 18 or 20. Eliza was a cockney from the streets of London and transforms into a beautiful young woman. Julie also went through a transformation, not only in soul, but she actually stopped rehearsal. A woman with such perfect diction has a hard time speaking really wrong on purpose. She spent a whole weekend just learning how to speak improper English, when they should have been practicing for opening night. After 2.5 years in New York, and a year in London, she became tired of her character and went to Camelot.

Camelot was released in 1960 and was her personal favorite. This was the play that made Walt decide on the role of Poppins. In the song What do the Simple Folk do?, Julie has a solo in which she whistles, Disney thought that whistling was a quality a nanny should hold. She played Queen Guenevere, the naughty, shallow queen of Camelot. It was different, more colorful, and a large change from timid Eliza. She loved it more than anything, now at the age of 66, she is our beloved, star.

At the beach

Write your Narriative beach research paper

It was a day like every other that summer. I went to the beach with Julie. I played as she worked. She was a lifeguard at Breakheart Beach. I went with her every day and our mom picked us up at six forty five. On this day there weren’t that many people, in fact only two people were in the water the whole day. I admire Julie greatly, so of course as any little brother would I would do anything she or her friends would tell me to. Just to impress them. This unfortunaly would not be to my advantage today.

Being that there were only two people in the water only one guard had to be at his post. Julie and all her friends had dared me to go up to the first aid station and fill the huge green bucket with the ice cold water from the hose. I can still remember walking towards the ugly and musty first aid station. The whole time over there I was thinking which way I would run after dumping the water on Seth’s head. I had the greatest escape route. I was going to run around the chair a few times then back up the hill to the road then straight to the playground.

It seemed like it took an hour to fill that green bucket. It weighed about a million tons. And I was struggling to even pick it up. Never mind carry it all the way down the hill and then to dump it on Seth. I carried it about ten feet at a time. This made the trip to Seth a little longer than expected. Still going over my escape route. This was going to make all the older people like me.

Finally I almost made it to then edge of the hill I needed to make it to before I could get my target. I picked up the huge bucket and dumped it on the poor kids head. He still had his sweatshirt on. He jumped right off the chair. My escape plan went into action. I ran around the chair several times he was not even close. I sprinted to the hill directly behind the chair and began to run up it. I slipped on mulch. Seth got a hold of me. He picked me up and ran towards the water he was soaked so it didn’t matter to him if he went in too. He must have tripped and we both fell me first then him on top. All I felt was a thump and then my leg felt like I had pins and needles. When my head hit the rock I saw what looked like a flash of light. When he got of atop of me I looked down to see the inside of my knee cap. I saw the yellowish bone and pudding like cartilage of my knee. When I saw that a feeling went straight to my stomach. It was like I saw something your not suppose to see. After what seemed like for ever waiting for an ambulance and holding my skin together, they came and took me to the hospital. My doctor told me that it was a bad injury and that it was in a bad spot. He said that it required stitches but being on the kneecap it was impossible.

As traumatic as that was it didn’t really hurt all that much. It must have been the Adeline pumping, which shut off my pain. Seth must have felt really bad. I kind of felt bad for him seeing that I was to blame for it. That should have been a lesson to me about showing off but it didn’t work to good.

Nathan Kotera English 001

9/25/01 Essay #1

What kind of a man would let a little girl kick him square in the “junk”? What would you think if that same man would pierce his butt cheeks together just to say he has done it? To find a guy willing to do all of these stupid stunts one does not even have to get out of his recliner! People performing senseless stunts, like those mentioned above; can be found on MTV’s new show Jackass. This smash hit show features a bunch of skateboarding punks endangering their physical well being for our enjoyment. Teens from all over are lured to the show and prompted to recreate the stunts they see. These teens are lured to the show for comic relief and the attitudes presented in the show are related to or swallowed up by these teens. Teens then take the show to a new level by recreating these stunts. The stunts are recreated by teens because media tells teens that if they recreate these stunts, even if they do look stupid, it will result in acceptance from peer groups. The comical stunts performed in the show are funny for a while, but have a tendency to be taken too far, making Jackass a perfect candidate for reformation.

Attitude is what Jackass is all about. The show involves many different attitudes coming together during one crammed half-hour, but rebellion is the attitude that stands in charge, a drill sergeant leading his troops. During the maturation period of a human being a mindset of rebellion sets in, as the whole teenage being changes its form and identity. These teens are confused as to why they need rules and regulations, therefore, rebellion against authority figures transpires. The producers of Jackass know that this occurs in young adults and uses them as the target audience of their master plan. Jackass targets these rebels and lures them in, with numerous skits throughout the episode geared toward rebellion. Throughout the episode about 40% of the skits are geared toward rebellion mainly against police. The teenagers turn to the show because they can relate what is being performed, directly, with actions they perform in their own lives. The show is a way for these teens to either vent their frustrations with authority, or think of new ways to rebel against authority.

Write your Jackass research paper

The attitude of rebellion is not the only thing on a teenager’s mind, depression is often felt because of school, girls, work, etc.. Therefore, these teens need a bit of comic relief in their lives to bring them up from the low they are stuck in. This natural high, of comic relief, can be brought about on MTV at 9:00 p.m. central time every Sunday. Consequently, the show turns into a weekly event for hundreds of thousands of teens across America. The producers know that they can count on teens tuning into the show religiously, and that is how Jackass gets its success and popularity. This success and popularity is achieved even though some of the stunts executed are taken to a level that has never been thought of. Many people I know, myself included, find themselves changing the station for some parts of the show because it is repulsive to watch. The producers of Jackass need to think of the audience they broadcast to and incorporate stunts that are not as drastic.

With this many rebellious and depressed teens performing an act so religiously it is going to have an impact on the way that they think and act. The show unconsciously encourages kids to duplicate the stunts performed, even with the obvious warnings that appear throughout the show. I say unconsciously because the show doesn’t intend on hurting teens. What the producers of Jackass do not take serious enough, is that teens strive to be like what they see on TV. These teens want to do what is on TV because they look at people on TV as successful and cool, and these teens want to grow to be successful like the actors on Jackass. Producers try to take measures to discourage the reproduction of these acts, but it is not enough just to say that the people performing the stunts on TV are trained professionals. Now how much of a trained professional do you have to be to smack another guy on the face with a plunger? What kind of professional training is needed to snowboard down a mountain completely naked? These teens recognize that they really are not trained professionals and the teens are just as trained as the actors on Jackass.

Many cases of teens trying to duplicate these “professional” stunts they see on TV have been documented, and can be found on the web page, http://www.seanbaby.com/news/jackass.htm. Some recreations include a 13-year old boy lighting himself on fire, just like he saw Johnny Knoxville (an actor and producer of the show) do. The only thing wrong is that Knoxville was wearing a flame-retardant suit, and the teen wasn’t. Another documented case was when a group of teens decided to recreate a drive-thru stunt from the show. The teens had one boy run by the cashier window and snatch the bag of food as he/she handed the food to the customer. The only problem was that the cashier didn’t let go of the bag and broke his/her arm. The creator of the show Johnny Knoxville answered to these cases by saying, that young kids should not send in tapes of them performing various stunts, because they are not seen by any cast members or producers of the show. He went on to say that Jackass highly discourages the performance of any stunts shown on the show.

Teenagers ignore the warnings posted throughout the show and recreate stunts anyway. Some teens in my school thought that it would be cool to recreate a game on Jackass called “nut ball”. They would wear nothing but underwear, sit across the room from each other, and throw different objects at each other’s crotches. The winner is the guy who can defeat all the other guys in the room, by making his opponents raise the white flag. What a fantastic game to play with all of your male buddies, huh? I don’t know about you, but flying objects coming towards my crotch just doesn’t thrill me. When I asked the guys why in the world they enjoyed the game, they said because they saw the game on Jackass and it looked cool. Fellow peers would always ridicule them about playing such a stupid game, but they continue to play it and other games they see on the show.

Looking stupid in front of your friends, and doing these stupid stunts to become cool really does not work. The reason why teens think looking stupid is cool, is because the show surfaces the idea that if you do these actions you can and will be accepted by today’s “in groups”. Five days ago news struck my ears that an old acquaintance of mine, in Wahoo, was nearly paralyzed performing Jackass stunts. The teenager was looking for a spot in the “in group” of Wahoo, and had to recreate some Jackass stunt to gain acceptance. He knew that the actions he was about to perform were stupid and could cause him loads of trouble, but he wanted to be seen as cool by the “in crowd”. It is this portrayal by the media, that characters on TV, no matter how stupid they can be, are always cool that almost ended his life.

The teens are lured in to recreate the stunts seen because they can relate with the themes represented by Jackass, and want to be cool and successful like these actors. The influences that the show has on our teenage society can be directly paralleled with the effects of another hit MTV show Beavis and Butthead. The show had the same exact effect on rebel teens in society, as does Jackass. The only difference is that Beavis and Butthead were cartoons and Jackass involves real people. If a show involving cartoons performing stupid acts can go too far, then a show with real people performing stupid acts goes even farther. Beavis and Butthead caused so many injuries and accidents that the show was taken off the air. If the show Jackass does not reform its content, and simmer down the stunts, then the show may have to be canceled as well.
