This paper traces the changing constitution of wilderness in two books by Sharon Butala, The Perfection of the Morning (14) and Wild Stone Heart (000), arguing that Butala¡¦s narrative moves from a reductive ¡§wilderness plot¡¨ to a more inclusive ¡§deep map.¡¨ Where the former book constructs prairie space through essentialized divisions between nature and culture, urban and rural, Wild Stone Heart depicts how even ¡§wilderness¡¨ is overwritten by cultural and political forces. This essay reads Don McKay¡¦s unorthodox ¡§nature poetry¡¨ through forms of ecocriticism that engage the question of what humans¡¦ inevitably anthropocentric approach to the nonhuman world means for the ecological capacities of poetry. It suggests that McKay¡¦s use of humour and metaphor can be understood as profoundly ecological in the context of two related paradigms Joseph Meeker¡¦s theory of comedy and Jan Zwicky¡¦s postulation of ¡§lyric comprehension¡¨ as ecological modes of approach to the nonhuman. This paper explores the dynamics of not belonging for Afro-Caribbeans in both the Caribbean and Canada. Because Canada refuses to recognize the Caribbean immigrant, it becomes a no-place for her. The result is a drying up and disintegration of identity. The nonmaterialization of ¡§another place,¡¨ alongside the water imagery that figures the love between and selfhood of the novel¡¦s female characters, exemplifies Paul Gilroy¡¦s theory that the fixities of nation space are inadequate signifiers of black cultural identity.

The Urban Working Girl in Turn-of-the-Century Canadian Fiction

At the turn of the twentieth century, Canada¡¦s rapid industrialization drew on a relatively new urban labour force young, single women. A denizen of factories, city streets, and department stores, the single, wage-earning woman represented to her contemporaries everything that was unnatural and unnerving about modern life. Where she made her way into fiction, we find rare social documents that speak of cultural codes unravelled and gender norms discarded.
