The consequence of evil are always horrible. It affects a lot innocent people

and causes great damage. We can see Macbeth have some psychol problems. He

saw ghost and acting wired . He always worried about his safety .The more people

he killed, he worried more about his future that someone might kill him. But he

only knows killing is the best way solving his problems, so everybody afraid

about him and he trust nobody and become a very mean person. But the

consequence of evil will come back to Macbeth, because his crime he deserve to

go to hell. Revenge bring Macduff come back and killed him.

Heroism must be true in motivation as in action in order to be truly heroic. (Assignment sheet) In this case the youngest of legendary Mirabal sisters Maria Teresa can not be considered as a heroine since Mates motivation was never to create a better future for Dominican Republic but to find her true love and commit herself to this relationship.

Through out the novel In The Time Of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez we closely follow the four Mirabal sisters from their early childhood up until the accident. Despite Trujilo and all the crimes Trujilo committed against the Mirabal family, in general each and every one of the girls is filled with happiness and light-hearted feelings. Especially the youngest sister Maria Teresa. However upon hearing horrible stories and living under Trujilos monsterous shadow she gets involved in the secret resistance to Trujillo and the SIM (some type of a secret police). Or in other words that is how its told to be.

Maria Teresa took part in the movement but that is not enough to make a heroine out of her because she was not true in her motivation. Her purpose and place in the resistance has not got even a single thing in common with the rest of the group. Here I am almost twenty two years old and not true love in sight. she says on page 17 in 157, the year when Minerva graduates and moves to Monte Cristi. Right there we know what she is looking for in life. She is not interested in political issues of Dominican Republic but her very own life. She is not looking for freedom in thoughts or in rights but longing in heart.

That is exactly the same year she meets Palomino. Maria Teresa falls in love with this guy as soon as she meets him. Palomino brings the delivery and asks Mate You aren’t one of us, are you? (p.14) just to be on the safe side. Then we see Mate thinking I didn’t know what us he was talking about, but I knew right then and there, I wanted to be a part of whatever he was.(p.14) A mysterious guy comes with a delivery and Mate jumps right into the battle without a clear purpose in mind. The next morning Mate …told Minerva and Manolo right out that she wanted to join. (p.14) Because as she said she didn’t want to be babied anymore, she wanted to be worthy of Palomino. Obviously she forgot. The organization is not for young women in a hurry to grow up. The hurry is for a better government and for the better future of the Dominican Republic.

When she first starts working for the organization, she is not aware of the consequences of the actions she is about to take. On the other hand, in her mind, as long as Palomino and Mate are together, nothing would go wrong. She has a very romantic view of the whole resistance movement going on around her. Dede, even before any of the sisters heard anything about Trujilo, said Maria Teresa was great on love woes;… On page 14 Maria Terese also says I always make them stay for as long as a cafetcito to give the illusion that they are real visitors. I am a natural for this, really. I have always liked men, recieiving them, paying them attention, listening to what they have to say. Now I can use my talents for the revolution. But I have eyes for one man only, my Palomino. She is recieving boxes of guns but all she thinks of is how good she is when receiving man, talking to them ect. A true heroine holds her heroic purpose before anything where as Maria Teresa is a heroine because if she wasn’t Palomino and she would never come together. She wouldnt be able to seduce Palomino. She needed something concrete to prove Palomino that Maria Terese has grown up. Thinking from a man’s point of view, I think Palomino is aware of everything and that is why he doesn’t want her to keep doing the organization work.

On the third part of the book when they got arrested, Maria Teresa started to realize what she had done was more serious and more dangerous than she had ever thought. In addition prison was where she thought more about her expectations from life. However it was quite late to reconsider such things. On page she even says I have got a big worry and Minerva isn’t here for me to talk to. I go back and calculate. Leonardo and I were trying like crazy in December and January. I wanted another one soon, since I have enjoyed having my Jacqui so much. Also I admit; I wanted an excuse to stay home. Like Dede, I just didn’t have the nerves for revolution, but unlike her; I didn’t have the excuse of a bossy husband. Not that Leonardo wouldn’t have preferred for me to be just his wife and his little girl’s mother. More than once he said one revolutionary in the family was enough.(P.40) Now she knows that she didn’t want to sacrifice anything for the organization, it’s already too late. Minerva who is really committed to her true purpose and very truly motivated, never pronounced anything of that kind. She knew what she was doing. She took the risks and she knew what might happen. Yet it did not matter because Minerva served for the holy purpose, for her country and had no regrets.

Staying alive would suit Maria Teresa more than it did Dede if only Maria Teresa was able to be more of an adult when making decisions at the crossroads of her life. She was not a heroine and she didnt have to pretend she was. At least she could have been clever enough to stay at home when Palomino asked her to do so. Maria Teresa although she was the sweetest chracter in the book can not be considered as a heroine. She did not have neither the true motivation nor the courage to handle the responsibilities of a heroine. In the Time Of Butterflies

America has always had a historic role as a haven for immigrants from all over the globe. For many reasons, many unrestricted immigrates were seeking a new life in the U.S in the late 1th century and early 0th century. Not everyone was happy with this, such as a group of people called the “nativists.” The nativists were largely made up of American born Protestants who disliked the idea of immigration. They had many reasons for disliking the new immigrants, such as social disagreements, religious disagreements, culture differences and many more things. The nativists did not like America’s liberal view towards immigration, so many groups discriminated and despised against them.

In earlier years, immigrants had always been generally welcomed and been encouraged to immigrate, but at the turn of the 0th century many people began to get worried about how the immigrants would assimilate in this country. Many people felt it would be almost impossible for all these immigrants to assimilate and absorb our culture. Many immigrants did not speak English or know anything about our country, so they had to go to night schools. People were worried and felt that if the immigrants did not migrate, this country will be like the old one. The big phrase used to describe nativist assimilation was “melting pot,” which represented good assimilation, and “salad bowl,” which represented dissimilation. Nativists looked at the new immigrants as inferior and a lower race, and people such as Senator Lodge felt that the lower race would eventually absorb and spoil the superior race. Despite all of the worries of many nativists, the immigrants picked up American culture and language very well, and became “Americanized.”

Other than culture assimilation, the nativists were worried about the new religious assimilation. Most new immigrants were either Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, or Jewish in a primarily Protestant land, and that was very troubling for many. Many nativists hated the Catholics, which were mainly Irish and German during old immigration. Then there was the even more hated wave of new immigrants who came mostly from southern and eastern Europe such as Italy, Poland, Russia, China and Greece, instead of from the northwest Europe like Germany, Ireland, and England. This meant that they were even more likely to be Catholic or Jewish instead of Protestant, and religious ethnical discrimination was without question and important source of wanted anti immigrant policies. In 1885, Reverend Josiah Strong described the presence of immigration in America as a disease, because these new Catholics would destroy the Sabbath, and bring in their religious customs.

Economic competition was considered to be one of the main nativist concerns. With all of the new immigrants coming in, that meant fewer jobs for the American born employer. With all of the jobs being taken away from American born people and given to immigrants, much racism and resentment was happening. Many people felt, that if immigrants, especially the Chinese were going to be allowed in this country, it would antagonize many people. Unlike the immigrants of the old immigration, since many came from places such as China, Italy, Greece and Poland, they looked different, which always causes confrontation. One of the most notorious books about immigration was, “The passing of the Great Race,” by Madison Grant. This book was written with much racism and said things like the new immigrants contain many weak and defective people, and they lower the standard of America with their crime and vulgar lifestyles.

Despite America being the land of religious and political freedom, that may of not been the case for all immigrants. Many immigrants faced ridicule and hate for their religion, race and cultural differences. The new immigrants had it much harder because of their customs and there unique look. There were many ways reasons why the nativists felt they had the right to discriminate against the immigrants, but the did not. Many of the immigrants had a positive immediate affect on this country. The mixing of two cultures is what makes this country so great and unique.

My Role Model

To me a role model is someone in my life that has influenced me in a positive way. They help shape the way I am in the present and what I will be in the future. They are some one that I can look to for advice in a hard situation and know that they will give me words of wisdom. They will never judge me on my past but only look to help because they really do care about me. Some one who I never feel awkward talking to about my problems because I know that it will not change their opinion of me and they will not reveal any information about me to anyone. A role model should be sincere and not out for there own good but the good of others. I think that they should be older then I am because they need to have more experience then I do and need to have a deeper insight. It would be pointless to have a role model who knows less then me. There are so many people in my life that have influenced me but there is only one that I can say is truly a role model and that is my sister Jan.

My sister Jan is the second oldest of my five siblings and the only girl. She is thirty-two years old and has been married to a wonderful man named Kevin for seven years. She has a three-year-old boy named Dylan and a three-month-old baby named Elijah. Her husband Kevin is a schoolteacher and she is a stay at home mother. She attended Union Catholic High School then went to Union County College and finished with getting her masters at Rucker’s. She had a high-powered government job in New York City, which she had to give up when she had her first Child Dylan. This was a huge change for her because she was used to being so independent and working long hours in a huge city and now her day consists of taking care of a rambunctious three year old and a helpless three month old. They change took a huge toll on her. She went from making a large amount of money to living on a teacher’s salary with many burdensome bills. After Dylan arrived on the scene she had a bad case of post mortem depression and after Elijah was born the depression became much more sincere. Her doctor told her that she should not have any more children because it was getting so bad. In the beginning things were not going to well for her. I remember many instances where she would be at my house and just burst out in tears in the middle of a conversation because she was so down. I know that she is a great mother and sometimes she gets down about her children and what it would be like if she did not have them, but if she could she would not change history.

Jan posses many amazing qualities that I have realized after seventeen years of knowing her. I know that she is a great family oriented person; her family is the center of her life. She has a great relationship with my mother and is at my house almost every single day. They are on the phone constantly and are not afraid to tell each other anything. This is something that many mothers and daughters do not have. That fact that she is such a smart person and is such a hard worker is something that I envy. Her unselfishness is a characteristic about her that everyone who meets her knows about. She gave up so much when she had her children and does not regret that at all. Right now if she never had children she could have a lot of money, friends and possessions bit she does not care about any of that. Her main worry is providing the best possible life for her family and she discovered that money will not make this happen. She is providing them with two loving parents, a loving family and a healthy stable environment.

Mid-Term Essay Question Native Americans Relationship to Social Studies

I choose the fourth essay and will attempt to write about how my study of Native Americans relates to the definition of Social Studies. My definition of social studies is a course that studies the history, the people and the culture of a certain area. In the next two paragraphs, I will provide you with the information I have learned about Native American history so far this year.

At least 10,000 years ago, Native Americans made history by crossing the Bering Strait into what is now called North America. They migrated through the East and through the South, eventually spreading to the present-day North Carolina. The first contact made between Europeans and Indians was a pleasant one. The Indians taught the Europeans their way of life and their many different skills in exchange for manufactured goods. However, the Europeans took advantage of the Indian’s hospitality and started to take their land. This caused conflict between the Indians and the Europeans which led to many wars. There is little history recorded about Indians between the 1700’s and early 1800’s. But with the help of political parties, the Indians began to re-establish their identities and their tribes in the late 1800’s.

As the European settlers began to study the Indians, they grouped the Indians by their languages. The three language groups of North Carolina were the Iroquian, the Siouan, and the Algonquian. The Iroquian’s settled in the mountain region, the Siouan’s settled in the Piedmont region, and the Algonquian’s settled in the coastal plains region. They were also divided into four cultures groups. The Paleo Indians arrived before 10,000 years ago. They were the only Indians to hunt big game like Bison. The Paleo Indians were nomads. The Archaic Indians were hunters of small game, nuts and roots.. These were the first Indians to make their own shelter. The Woodland Indians were the first to grow crops and to use a bow and arrow to hunt instead of spears. They lived in round houses in small villages. The Mississippian Indians also hunted small game and grew crops but lived in towns with ceremonial buildings.

In conclusion, I want to talk a little bit about making connections. I have been taught throughout Social Studies that it is important to make connections between the material presented and history. I think I have just written about one of the most important connections in North Carolina history. Not the connection of knowledge, but the connection of land (the land bridge) that brought the first Native Americans to North America. This is how the history of Native Americans began. Ten thousand years ago, life seemed to be carefree for the Indians, but today things have become much more sophisticated and tribes span across the continents, from coast to coast.

“Now here comes the sad part of the story, at least my family says it’s sad but I don’t think it’s sad myself.”(14) Young Sammy in the story A & P, written by John Updike, said that to show an optimistic view about the decision of quitting his job as a salesclerk in A & P. Whether it is a “crazy” decision or a reasonable one, it did work someway helpfully for that young man, especially as a resolution for all the conflicts he had to face since taking a job in that supermarket.

It is not Sammy who wanted to work for Lengel’s shop. Sitting in the third checkout slot all day long, watching the shopping-goers going back and forth, checking the cashier, and leaning on the register whenever the store is empty were such a boring work to Sammy. Yet he had to take this job to please his parents for they are the A & P manager’s friends. Born in a poor family, Sammy seemed not to like that unfortunate situation. That’s why he was impressed by the three girls, Queenie, Plaid, and Big Tall Goony-Goony, not only because of their attraction but also their wealth, which he hadn’t had in his poor home. And with a relationship for years between Mom and Dad with Lengle, Sammy expected to take a job for pleasing the parents and having some money for his poor family. However, working in the supermarket might be the saddest part of his story, even sadder than quitting a job. Everyday, boring salesclerk served the customers as if they were “sheep”(1), “house slaves”(14), or “witches”(1). And when all shoppers disappeared, a “pretty empty store” was described as a “pinball machine”(14) where there wasn’t any tunnel to come out. These descriptions showed that Sammy didn’t like the customers, nor did the supermarket. Therefore, he felt that being a cashier is not a suitable job for him.

The conflict within protagonist Sammy involved not only because of serving the “sheep” and working in a “pinball machine”, but also bearing with conservative Lengel. The attitude toward his manager was so irritated that he said “Everybody luck begins to run out”(15) when Lengel came in. Maybe the relationship with Sammy’s family reasonably made Lengel more powerful as his boss and really annoyed to him. Everytime, he wanted to rebel or disobey, Lengel took advantage of his relationship to have authority “Sammy, you don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad”(16). And off course, it was the weakest point that he couldn’t live on his own way and had to accept every rule in A & P.

Dealing with a boring job, unlikable customers and conservative boss, Sammy carried all the conflicts within his mind, which seemed unbearable someday. Therefore this brought a motivation of quitting job from the disagreement between him and Lengel about the three attractive female customers. As a young man, salesclerk Sammy liked to watch the three girls in bathing suits walking in the supermarket. Their impressive appearances surfaced all frustration in his work. However, his conservative boss didn’t accept that kind of clothes and asked the girls to get out of the store. The way the girls were “blush”(16) made young Sammy “scrunchy”(16) Consequently, he decided to quit his job to show a rebellion to Lengel’s unreasonable rule and to become an unsuspected hero for the girls.

essay writing service

Actually, the unbearable conflicts that he withstood for so long together with his disagreement to Lengel about the girls are the main reasons for Sammy to stop working in A & P. Why did he have to work in an uninteresting place? Why couldn’t he deny serving the “house laves”, “sheep” and “witches”? Why should he stand associating with such conservative boss as Lengle? All of the conflicts could be left for a long time because of the parents whom Sammy never wanted to displease. And it was time for him to emphasize his needs and live on his own. This caused a motivated conflict with his manager, which moved him to act as a resolution for all unbearable anger. However, Sammy got nothing from this decision. Even a little consolation of being an “unsuspected hero”(16) couldn’t come true for the girls were gone without any care about him. Quitting a job only helped Sammy become a winner in a rebellion with Lengel and his own conflicts. However, it did bring him to a harder world, as he knew already what he got. It was so reasonable for a rebel to stand for his principles. But it wasn’t a good choice since it left young Sammy to face an unpredictable and difficult circumstance. He wasn’t mature enough to think ahead for his future life. If only Sammy hadn’t lost his temper, if only he had a little time to think more, and found another resolution such as finding another job before stop working for Lengel, he wouldn’t make up his mind so hastily while a leading way for life was still another harder question.

Whether the future was brighter or not, young Sammy would find the way to manage his difficult situation. He experienced what to do to stand for his identity, then he would know how to make a better life.

Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley Kent on, September 1, 1866. He is said to be the father of science fiction. His parents were shopkeepers and his father was a professional cricket player until he broke his leg. In 188 Wells became a teacher at Midhurst Grammar School. However, in 1887 he lost interest in school and left. In 181 he settled down in London and married his cousin Isabel. In 18 Wells became a professional writer. He divorced his wife and married his pupil Amy Catherine. His first major fiction novel was The Time Machine which he wrote in 185. During the time Wells spent writing this novel he was overly concerned with the fate of our society. He was also a member of the prestigious Fabian Society which was a group of philosophers in London. In the late 10’s Wells had an obsession that our society was on the brink disaster.

The novel The Time Machine was the story of a man that is referred to as The Time Traveler. He builds a machine that can travel through time and goes into the year 80,701 where he finds a society that he believes is utopian. As he further views this society he finds that it is far from perfect. At first he sees the people called the Eloi and thinks of them as the perfect race. He later finds out that these people are bred to feed another race called the Morlocks. He proves that the society he finds is far from being a utopian society and that a utopian society can not exist. He shows this through the knowledge of the characters and of the races in this book.

“There was no way out of the cages of life but by knowledge-knowledge of man himself and of man in relation to the things about him.”[Hillegas, Mark R, Pg. 1]. This is evident in The Time Machine from the actions of the Eloi. The Eloi mindlessly go to their doom at the will of the Morlocks. If they contained knowledge they would have been able to resist the Morlocks and they could fight for themselves instead of following the Morlocks wishes. Only with knowledge could the Eloi break free from the “cages” of life so they can control their own lives.

“To his horror the Time Traveler discovers that the Morlocks are still meat eaters… human meat.”[Wells H.G., Pg.] The fact that the Eloi are bread for food only is proof that the Eloi have no knowledge and therefore can not co-exist with the Morlocks without this system of breeding. This shows that a utopian society can not exist with this system in its society. The Morlocks are advanced and have the intellect to breed the Eloi but the Eloi have no way of defending themselves and this is why the more intellectual species is dominant. Although there is one intellectually advanced species the scale is not balanced and therefore this society is not a utopia.

“There he (time traveler) finds decaying palaces and a little pixie like people called the Eloi, living on fruit doing no work, somewhat epicene, easily fatigued, a sort of flower people.”[Wells H.G., Pg]. This shows that the Eloi are of little to no intellect and do no have the intelligence to do many things by themselves. These people can not perform simple tasks and live out their lives and make something out of their existence. These people can not produce all normal functions and are more like mindless cattle instead of human beings.

In conclusion a utopian society can not exist without knowledge. The Eloi had no knowledge therefore their society could not be a utopia. A utopian society has to contain equilibrium within its society. The Morlocks were vastly more intelligent than the Eloi but, since the Eloi were beneath the Morlocks a perfect society was not reached.

In the novel The Time Machine there were two societies which were called the Morlocks and the Eloi. The Eloi used to be the rich upper class people and the Morlocks were the poor working class. The working class wan sent underground so that the rich people did not have to see them. The Morlocks used technology and kept using it while the Eloi stopped using technology because they had no need to use it anymore. As a result the Eloi just got lazier and lost all of their knowledge.

“There were numbers of guns, rifles, and pistols.”[Wells H.G. Pg 86].The Time Traveler finds these things in a museum on the surface. This shows that the Eloi once had access to technology such as weapons and survival gear but had no need for it anymore and as a result their society declined. This also shows that the Eloi have the capacity to learn but they still need something to spark their minds.
